Interview with Sheri L. Swift

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the valley of California. My family would take summer vacations to the local lakes and West coast. In the fall, we would camp in the Sierras where my father taught us to hunt and fish and to appreciate all of God's creation.
When did you first start writing?
In Junior high school, I had a wonderful teacher named Mrs. Perry who inspired us to write our dreams.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's an Elven love story (The Hart of Telendaria) which was originally created in my mind between the ages of 9 and 13, but also combined with a Pixie story I wrote when I was 22. I especially wanted to write this story for my grandchildren to enjoy one day. It was actually the first one ever written, but I knew it would take a great deal to make it what I wanted and at the time I was battling cancer and didn't have the energy, so I chose to publish the Legend of the Mer story first. I nearly ended it with 35 chapters (Call to Arms), but still had some thoughts rolling around in my head. I decided to write one more chapter (Life's Sweet Fulfillment) as a gift to anyone who might wonder what the future held for my characters.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After trying to get my first book published for over a year (sending out queries 3+ times a day), I decided to self-publish. You might say I did it for my grandchildren because I'd developed cancer and wasn't sure I'd be around to tell them my stories.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It allowed me the first market place to go global.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I wrote many short stories when I was younger, Legend of the Mer being one of them and after my baby entered college it became my turn to do something that I loved.
What do your fans mean to you?
They're the best, they give me encouragement to keep writing and they also help me to find errors! Lol! ;)
What are you working on next?
Now that I've published my Elven story, I plan to continue the Legend of the Mer series. I've enjoyed telling Lana and Jedediah's story, now I hope to go on to tell the other two siblings' stories.
Who are your favorite authors?
Definitely J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, but also enjoy Stephen Lawhead, Karen Hancock, Kathleen Morgan, Gilbert & Lynn Morris, etc.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life, it's a beautiful thing and who wouldn't want to participate! ;)
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
With my Sweetheart husband, children and grandchildren; they all inspire me as a writer; especially seeing things through the eyes of my grandchildren.
