Interview with Melissa Mercer

When did you first start writing?
I have been writing for as far back as I can remember. Writing has always been my escape from the real world around me. The reality of my life was difficult to grasp, therefore creating my own reality; was my happy medium.

Even as a small child I wrote beyond my years. I spoke of things and a world that other children my age knew nothing of. Still, the more I wrote, the less it hurt. Thus, I wrote my pain away, one word at a time.

As long as I had a pencil and a piece of paper, I had hope. My pencil was the only defense I had in a world, which I could not control. It was my magic wand, and through it; I could be anything or anyone I desired. I could live a life beyond my own, and I have.

Writing is my cure.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Echoes of the Game is my latest paranormal thriller.

Best friends Nikki and Renee are introduced to a Ouija board for the first time, and from the very moment their fingertips touch the cursor; their horrifying adventure begins.

Neither of them knew the extent of what they were dealing with, and that one decision to play such a treacherous game, has lifelong effects.

A gateway between worlds was opened that day, linking all of them together, and a sadistic entity wreaks havoc upon them both. Still, the bond Nikki and Renee share is more powerful than this evil phenomenon and it longs for something it does not have; life.

Even when life lands Nikki and Renee far away from one another, this entity is most powerful when they are together, and it will go to terrifying lengths to make that happen; including going through their children.

This entity infects every aspect of their lives, and only they can stop it, for, they are the ones that let it out. Even so, there is an even deeper and jaded past to this entity, and one by one the truth behind their terrifying ordeal begins to reveal itself.

The answers as to the entity's past, only comes out in the end, but the intensely horrifying twists and turns is sure to have you on the edge of your seat, while turning every light in the house on along the way.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My motivation behind becoming an indie author, is freedom of expression. I am always writing, and putting together different projects and genres. As an independent author, I have the option of creating any genre that my mind can muster up. My mind does not have an off switch, and my wheels are always spinning. Writing is my voice, my form of artistry; it is how I speak. For me, creating different genres, is like speaking multiple languages through my fingertips.

Becoming an independent writer was just that for me, being independent. Knowing that each time I put my stories together, I am edging myself just a little closer towards my goals in life.

I was a living ghost for far too long. I longed for the world to say my name, to know my face, and now they are reading my words. That to me, is priceless, for, it's not about the money to me, it is about the freedom of expression, and the sheer joy it brings me writing my own legacy.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me by far, is hearing people say that my words have helped them. Every horrible occurrence that happened within my lifetime, was a gift. Through every foul act, something amazing happened. I was gifted with this ability. To reach inside another person and touch their heart through written words, is a feeling unlike any other. Knowing that each day I continue to write, I am providing hope to someone who has lost it; that is my inspiration.

I would relive my life again, without changing one single aspect, because to me; the outcome was worth it.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean the world to me, without them, I would just be a girl with a dream. They are the reason my dreams come true. They are the inspiration and motivation behind everything I write. The reviews and the feedback from my fans, is the reason I continue to write. No words of thanks could ever express how truly grateful I am for everyone that purchases and reads my words. Having a voice, being known and being heard is all I have ever wanted out of life. Seeing my words being read all around the world, means more to me than I could ever express; and if not for the fans, that wouldn't be so. I would like to thank all of you for helping me support a dream, which I have spent a lifetime trying to achieve.
What are you working on next?
I have several projects in the works. I am writing my very first Romance Novel as well as putting together another poetry collection series.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I am not writing, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have a very loving husband and a beautiful daughter. My family is my lifeline. We are always going on family trips and making each moment together memorable. I feel it is important to make those memories. Ones my daughter can look back on and say. "I had a great childhood, and I know my family loves me." Being a mom is my most important role, and if my daughter is able to look back and say those words, then I feel I have accomplished it all.

My husband is the epitome of unconditional love, and he has stuck by my side through everything, and I love him with every fiber of my being. He is my knight, my hero, my heart.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Northern Florida called Lacoochee. My town has inspired a lot of my writing, for, I have always referred to that place as the plague.

As I walked down the poisonous streets and observed the falling down homes, drug sales being conducted on the corner, and local drunks leaned underneath an oak tree. I seen it as an infectious cycle, which kept repeating. No one longed for a better life, and even if someone did, they lived in fear of the possibility of it everyday.

There were a few residents who tried to broaden the horizons of my lovely little town, but the locals just wouldn't have it. Every business to open in Lacoochee was either vandalized, robbed or completely destroyed. The only business to succeed was the local bar, which now has fallen down.

That place to me is like a curse. For, I got out, but I always felt it tainted me in the process. I witnessed things I shouldn't have, and was introduced to people that I should have never been involved with; and I live with the memories my town has left me with, everyday.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life itself is the reason I get out of bed everyday. Inspiration can be found anywhere, you just have to look. I convey myself through everything that I write. Whether I am writing about a star in the sky, or the green grass covering the ground; it is never a star, or the grass I am writing about. I become the star and the blade of grass. No matter the subject, I try to relate to everything. I ask myself. What if you were that star or that blade of grass? Life, and everything in it, is my inspiration.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I always used writing as an outlet, it was my vintage point. However, my very first story, wasn't really a story at all, it was a poem.

My Elementary School held a poetry contest for every student within the fifth grade. The topic was on crime, and the winner throughout the entire fifth grade class, would have the opportunity to read their winning poem while attending a formal banquet held by the local sheriff. I remember the day they announced the winner over the intercom after the morning announcements. I was shocked, but overwhelmed with joy when my I heard my name.

My grandfather bought me a new dress and shoes especially for the occasion. Many people attended the banquet, and I read my winning poem upon a podium. That was my first moment in the spotlight, and I haven't stopped writing since.
