Interview with Michael Bertolini

When did you first start writing?
I first wrote when I was in middle school, but serious writing didn't begin until half-way through college.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was a story about a group of teenage boys given the power to change into animals. It became the basis for 'Creatures of the Night' which I wrote and published recently. It happened in sixth grade.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
That's tricky. I used to read a lot of age-appropriate material which has had little impact on my current writing (other than to expand on them to make them mature). A specific auhor that has influenced me would be Michael Chricton; his use of science to support his work always fasinated me; and Bram Stoker reinforced the idea that story structure could vary.
What is your writing process?
I start by conceiving a concept then create the characters that exist in the story. From that point I build a new world, if necessary, before writing a single word. Once I begin to write, after brain-storming, I try to determine how to begin. For example, the Isla character in the Dark Heritage Saga books was created just to begin the first book.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a vampire story called 'Son of Caesar' which is based off a story I tried to write almost a decade ago. I'm also working to get the rights to publish a story inspired by the Dino-Riders toys and tv show from the '80s.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm working on several; so I don't really know how to answer that. If it's one of the dinosaur books, I'm writing about humans that travel through time to prehistoric Earth. If it's the vampire book, it's about a man who has to face his vampiric destiny. Since I'm alwlays writing short stories, there are a lot of plots I could discuss but won't.
Describe your desk
My desk is a mess of notepads, sketches, empty soda cans, and legos. Yes, I said legos.
How do you approach cover design?
I think about the story and major parts in it. Then I try to determine a look that would attract a reader's eye. Since I have some moderate skill in graphic design, I usually create my own covers whenever possible.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I originally wanted to be picked up by a major book publisher; but that was unlikely to happen because so many good writers were fighting for the same single spot. That realization made me become an indie writer: it offers me some freedom and I can still get people to read my thoughts.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm exposed to more readers through e-books.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like to read a lot of HP Lovecraft and I have a particular love of dinosaurs, so I always enjoy 'Jurassic Park'
What are your five favorite books, and why?
'Jurassic Park' because it expanded my mind and made me want to write; The Lord of the Rings books because it gave me insight into fantasy; 'The Call of Cthulu' 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth' and 'The Dunwich Horror' may be short but they inspired me to created unexplainable and fantastic things.
Who are your favorite authors?
There are a lot so I'll just name a few. HP Lovecraft, Michael Chricton, Steven King, RA Salvatore, RL Stine, Anne Rice, George RR Martin, Edgar Allen Poe, Michael J Bertolini. Oops, did I name myself accidentally? Nope, that was on purpose.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Watching movies, watching TV, playing videogames, and procrastinating online.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to hear what people think. Whether they're reading a paperback of mine or one of my e-books; it's gratifying to get support. When these people spread news of me, and get others to read, that is truly joyous.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I search for certain topics and authors that I'm familiar with.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything. They give me the support I crave; though I honestly wish that they'd write more positive reviews to help get the word out.
