Interview with Michael Esser

What's the story behind your latest book?
The idea for "Invazion" - with a "z" for zombie - came about after I moved from Las Vegas to Kingman, Arizona. You see I went from this big city to a small town overnight and on one really dark and quiet night I realized just how isolated Kingman really was. Me being me, I thought to myself, "What would we do if zombies invaded?" "How would they attack?" "Why?" The story grew from there.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I think my motivation to become an indie author started first out of retaining a sense of control. I knew what I wanted and wanted to make sure I got it on my terms. I'm also a little impatient and waiting for some publisher to rubber stamp me didn't let me get moving fast enough. Not saying if one came along I wouldn't entertain the idea of traditional publishing, as long as it was still on my terms.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing I'm a full-time single father, a behavioral health technician who works with those in recovery from substance use disorders, and a 24/7 geek and fan of pop culture.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do, I was 9 years old and I awoke from a dream I was having about my friends and I going off into the desert to camp only to return the next day to discover 20 years had passed. I scribbled it on the back of some old homework with a purple crayon. I won a school writing contest with it a few years later.
What is your writing process?
Honestly, I usually get a wild idea that hits me out of nowhere and throw up the story line as fast as it comes to me.From there I refine an outline until I've got the main characters and the beginning, middle, and end hammered out and then I just go for it. Edit and repeat until something tingles and then I know I'm done.
What are you working on next?
Well, for print I am working on an original semi superhero story about a father who gets fed up with the corruption and fear in his small community, but by doing something about it re-invites trouble from his past. Then, I'm developing another original idea into a pilot for a half-hour comedy TV show that I'll talk more about when I get closer to the end of the process.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I see Smashwords as a great outlet for any author looking to get their books in front of a vast audience and the total package of ebook conversion, book management, and distribution to dozens of outside sources mean that with as little or no resistance it's possible to get on the road to success quickly.
How do you approach cover design?
I think I approach my cover design like an artist does a blank canvas. I start throwing stuff at it until something clicks and it just feels right. If the overall finish product passes my "cool" test on sight, then I go with it. If not, I have no problem starting over. I think I like edge more then fluff.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I think my greatest joy in writing comes when I finish a project and look back knowing I created something I'm proud of. It's followed closely by hearing and seeing the responses from readers after they've experienced something I've written. Both of those things are really a rush for me.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth. Either friends tell me about something they've read or saw that they think I'd like or an online outlet I enjoy does a piece on something that calls to me.
