Interview with Michelle Dekker

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My husband, three jack-russell rescue puppies and life itself.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I do house chores. Oh yes, we writers have chores just like everybody else. I like to read, play with the puppies, get creative in the kitchen or on the laptop, pc or tablet. Read, watch a movie or surf the internet.
Who are your favorite authors?
Jane Austen, Stefanie Meyer, PC Cast, Kerrelyn Sparks, Agatha Christie, Val McDermid, James Patterson, Danielle Steele, Debbie Macomber.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have google books, kobo and kindle apps on my tablet. I usually just type a word in, look at the cover, read what other are saying and then decide if I want to read the book or not.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Masks. I was 15 years old. Still want to finish that story thou.
What is your writing process?
I don't have a process. Something inspires me I put it to paper. As soon as I start, it is like a tap being opened. My hand can't keep up with my thoughts.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, it was an afrikaans novel. Waar die nagtegal sing. Written by Susanna L. Lindeque. I was 14 years old and it was the first book I read, I choice myself. I was hooked from the first page. Even thou it has been many years since that faitfull love affair, I still remember the story and can tell you exactly what it was about and what the girl had on when the very handsome spanjard took her to lunch.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design is a very personal thing for me. I am very hands on and know what I want, hence I designed my own cover after watching countless tutorials on youtube. Thank you internet.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Pride and prejudice - I love Jane Austens hero's and heroine's.
Message from Nam - I love the way she uses her characters to bring home the message that this was one war that should have been left alone.
There's something about christmas - I love the way she writes about this season. I am a big christmas fan and always treat myself to one of her books. Who would have thought that a fruitcake competition would bring a lonely newspaper and pilot together.
The house of night series - Eish Zoe redbird got more guye issues than anyone I know. I just love her. She is strong and determined. I think what made me sympathise with her is that she didn't have a good relationship with her mother, but a fantastic one with her gran, just like I use to. Thanks to intervention from above, we are on good grounds.
Terminator - Technology has always fascinated me. If you just look back, it is actually scary to see how we have progressed.
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything I fancy. It always depends on my mood.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have an Huawei youth 7 tablet. Love it. My husbands gift to his gadget girl. I am not joking, you should see my kitchen.
