Interview with Michael C. DeMoss

When did you first start writing?
My brother Bill, as part of his medical practice, served the health needs of the prisoners near his clinic in Phoenix, AZ. He noticed that the prisoner who were being released were, all too often, returning to prison because they were not prepared to assimilate back into society. The American Rule Book was introduced into the prison system (as a voluntary reading guide), and we found that the "return to crime" was reduced among the readers of our book.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I am hoping that this book will help new immigrants in their assimilation to American culture. Our Law Office has represented many immigrants and have provided them with the American Rule Book. The 12 principles in our book have been very helpful in their transition to American citizenship.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I am the youngest of seven children of Greek immigrants. Our mother had a child every 2 years, on average. Unfortunately, our Father died and left our mother with seven children. The probability that we would all end up badly was pretty high. The fact that we all became Lawyers or Medical Doctors was so astonishing that, as adults, we all got together at my home and set down the principles that guided us away from a life of dysfunction and crime. We summarized our observations into 12 principles and those principles are the substance of the American Rule Book. My book is a guide to personal and national success. It is short and easy to read.
What's the story behind your latest book?
As an Attorney Volunteer in the County Juvenile Diversion Program, I used the American Rule Book to counsel over 800 teens, over a 12 year period. These teens had been arrested for the first time, and were given the choice of submitting to our program OR they could take their chances in court. Upon completion of the program we collected data to find that 80% of the teens who completed our program Did Not re-offend. The teens who did not attend our program: 80% of them re-offended.
