Interview with Michael Phillips

What do you read for pleasure?
True Crime stories, books on current events and travel books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media, Facebook and Twitter.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Boston area so I'm prone to write on Boston-centric things like the Red Sox and Patriots.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in high school. I would write long essays that were part of homework assignments in English class. One of them was titled 'What's Wrong with the Red Sox?"
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wanted to write a book about the bullying I experienced as a child growing up. I had to endure severe bullying both in junior high school and at home. I wanted to show how I was able to move on beyond that to create a normal life for myself.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to share my story and get it out there to others. Perhaps someone else will read my story and it will resonate with them. Bullying is such a common thing and a common problem in our schools. This was an issue I felt passionate writing about and how I was able to recover from it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has given me a platform to get my story out there.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is that it is such a creative pursuit. I enjoy putting thoughts flowing through my head to actual pen and paper.
What are you working on next?
I am considering writing a book focusing solely on all my travel experiences.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to travel, which I discuss in the book, and explore new places I haven't been to before.
