Interview with Mike Luoma

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the small town of Hudson, Massachusetts. When I think of my hometown I can't help remembering how the public library there was my gateway to the stars. The Hudson Public Library was my home away from home, a frequent stop after school. Loved their collection of "Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine" - they had issues going back through the 1960's and I read every back issue I could borrow. Some of the finest writing in the genre was published in the pages of F&SF - thanks to my hometown library I read most of those stories as they were originally published.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"Alibi Jones and The Sunrise of Hur" is a science fiction adventure. You can read this book on it's own or as the second book in the "Alibi Jones" series. It's hopefully written in such a way you can enjoy it without the first book, but if you've read the first book there are rewards for coming back to the story of Alibi Jones.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Tried to get published using traditional methods for years. When people read my work I got great feedback. But I didn't have enough connections in the publishing industry - couldn't even get my manuscripts looked at, never mind read and critiqued. With a 40+ hour full time job in northern Vermont I wasn't able to attend the conferences and gatherings one needed to attend to build relationships and score face time. I began investigating self-publishing, discovered Print-On-Demand, and became one of the first wave of self-publishing writers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It used to be the creating of worlds and characters, bringing them to life... but as readers have discovered my books, that's changed. What brings me the greatest joy now is when someone I've not met before gets in touch to talk about my books, and BC, Alibi and my other characters have become "real" to them - well, as real to them as they are to me!
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! As a self-publisher, I wouldn't keep doing this if I wasn't hearing back from fans that they're loving my books and characters. Keeps me going!
What are you working on next?
There's a new ALIBI JONES novel in the works, tentatively titled "Alibi Jones and the Hornet's Nest" - but I've recently been gripped by the need to tell a story based in English history, historical fiction based around the end of the War of The Roses and taking of the throne by Richard the 3rd. Kind of working on both concurrently.
Who are your favorite authors?
This could be a long list! Grew up reading Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and other "Grand Masters" of Science Fiction, as well as J.R.R. Tolkien, Stephen R. Donaldson, Terry Brooks and other fantasists. As my reading tastes matured I became a big fan of Philip K. Dick and Kurt Vonnegut, and recently I've been appreciating George R.R. Martin. But my favorite, and probably biggest influence, is Frank Herbert - DUNE is my favorite novel of all time!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Is this a trick question? Most of my spare time is dominated in some way by my writing, as my full time job is as a radio host and music director for The Point - Vermont's Independent Radio Network. Maybe the proper answer is - I'm on the radio! When I'm not reading and/or writing, music is usually my focus.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not really. Been writing as long as I can remember... can't remember what came first!
What is your writing process?
It used to be a much more "linear" process, but now I find I start with an outline, an idea of the work, and develop scenes and situations and conversations as they occur to me, wherever they may fall in the narrative. It's a bit more scatter-shot, but seems to produce stronger writing.
