Interview with Mike Swedenberg

How do you approach cover design?
The best way to design your cover is to study what the professionals are doing. The industry constantly evolves and it's important to remain current. Fortunately this is not difficult. Go to any online bookstore and study how major publishing houses design their covers. Don't study independent writers who may not have the resources, software or experience to design covers. Choose your genre and click on the best sellers. How dominate are the different parts of the cover? What colors do they use? What fonts are trending now and what is the proportion of the Author's name to the title. Is there a review on the cover? What about a tag line such as "From the Author of ----- " It's OK to borrow ideas but not to steal other's works and photos. Test your book cover design and if it's not working try something new. It's the beauty of eBooks.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Practically anything by the late Stephen E. Ambrose including Undaunted Courage, Nothing LIke it in the World and Band of Brothers. I enjoy biographies and historical works.

The first novel I read when I was about fourteen was Jack London's Call of the Wild, White Fang and Return to the Wild. It fostered my love of reading.

More recently, I enjoyed Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand.
What do you read for pleasure?
Biographies like "Elliot Ness" by Douglas Perry
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Whatever works at the moment. I use my PC that has a large screen, an iPad and Smartphone. I don't have a dedicated eReader.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social Media like Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Greenville South Carolina in the 1950s and '60s. It was a small town and I had a very sheltered life. I went through culture shock when I moved to New York and got my first job in a Manhattan Ad Agency. This affected my writing because I could see the culture differences of the great melting pot as compared to my life in Greenville.
When did you first start writing?
It was my first year at college when I studied literature. I wrote a few short stories but never got them published. Looking back on my writing skills at the time, I can understand why.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest novel, is The Wedding War. At age 37, Cindy Edwards hears her biological clock ticking away. She falls for a wise cracking, over the top salesman she met at work. Danny Freedman is 39 and feels time slipping by and wants to settle down. This will be the first trip to the altar for both and to celebrate, the couple plans an extravaganza. What could possibly go wrong?

Set in New York City in 1980, what should have been a simple wedding plan turns into a nightmare of broken promises, dishonest merchants and fast talking wedding vendors. While Danny deals with a Bully Boss at work, his free time is consumed with his bride-to-be’s drama. The wedding is a given, but how will Danny deal with the cascade of events as they spin out of control? Meanwhile Cindy proclaims, “My wedding is ruined.”
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I couldn't break into the traditional publishing industry and I had all of these great story ideas.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has made it possible to get published in a world-wide network of retailers. This is something I couldn't have done on my own without a tremendous amount of work. Imagine going to ten different retailers and creating an account, following their guidelines and uploading my books. Smashwords does that for me.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Telling stories that affect people. I want to make my readers laugh, cry, think, get mad and sometimes question my sanity.
