Interview with Milda Harris

Published 2014-05-14.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing as a little kid. I always loved stories and as soon as I could read I wanted to write some of my own down too!
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is Adventures in Murder Chasing, a Funeral Crashing novel. This whole series came out of a conversation I had with my mother after a funeral about "professional mourners" - mostly old women who like to go to funerals. It made me think - what if a 16 year old girl did that? And then she also became a teen sleuth who solved mysteries.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've sent out a ton of query letters and have gotten some bites, but nothing stuck. I decided that in the meantime I'd like to get my work read. Even if fifteen people read one of my books it would be worth it. Luckily, many more than that have become readers! It's very exciting and it keeps me writing!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been great. This site has introduced me to other indie authors, given me tons of marketing ideas, and helped with some of the distribution that I just don't have time for!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love telling stories. It's as simple as that!
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean the world to me! I'm so excited to have people who love my books! Email me! Comment on facebook or on my website! Send me a tweet on twitter! It's so much fun to talk to my fans!
What are you working on next?
I'm currently rewriting Doppelganger 2...and on pregnancy bed rest....with twins! Irony!
Who are your favorite authors?
I have so many! Meg Cabot, Suzanne Collins, RL Stine, Christopher Pike, Richie Tankersley Cussick, Jane Austen, Margaret Mitchell, Stephen King, JK Rowling, Janet Evanovich, Jennifer L Armentrout, and probably a billion others I'm just not thinking of right now!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My dog....she has to go out. :) Lol.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I also work in production/post production on kid's television shows. The latest is Austin & Ally. Although, I'm about to become a first time mom to twins....so that will take up some time! Other than that, I love books, movies, etc. I'm all about the stories!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I usually get recommendations from friends. Sometimes I hear about books form book blogs or on facebook posts. I'm always looking for a good read!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was in the fourth grade, I think. It was about being stuck in school all weekend.
