Interview with Moriah Davis

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Olathe, Kansas. It has been a powerful inspiration based on the local government's anti-telepathy standpoint. Writing about my experiences allowed me to face my fear of being further harassed and threatened for trying to prove that mind reading is explainable by science and that there isn't anything evil or bad about mind reading. Living in an environment stricken with cultural incompetency forced me to be brave enough to believe that the good of telepathy for everybody could outweigh the consequences of discrimination.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I feel that if I alter the story as to how I came to understand telepathy the way I do, then I may hinder the forward thinking of the future. For my first two works, the alternative to indie publishing was to change the names and key figures in my story, which changes the story.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
My local classes are great marketing. After attending a session, many students often download my books.
Describe your desk
My desk is incredibly sticky - with focus aids and other relative items that make it easy for me to hold onto thoughts as they come to me.
What do your fans mean to you?
Every positive thought in my direction means the world to me. The initial review I received from a fellow Smashwords self-publisher, which was the epitome of of my worst publishing nightmare, inspired me. My life does seem impossible, even to me. I consider all of my fans, friends, and I appreciate every thumbs up, You Tube view, and Twitter follow I receive.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first story when I was nine years old. I used creative names to describe real people in my life. For instance, "Fireball Jackson" was used to refer to a friend's father.
What are you working on next?
The Land ACT. New Israelis deserve protection and in light of all the events happening in our country today, there has to be more change than just a few amended laws. In the meantime, New Israelis need a place of sanctuary to be protected during this time of policy reform.
Who are your favorite authors?
Ed McGaa, Seth Horowitz, Sally Bedell Smith and Bryan Sykes
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The hope that one day, we will be together.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Mind reading, creating music, teaching human programming classes, watching great films and cooking up some salmon, whipping mashed potatoes or crafting some delectable desserts. I love sharing all of the above with my family and friends but me time means dousing myself in a bath of bubbly water and sipping jasmine tea with lemon, or nestling myself in soft covers and reading a great book on physics, preferably on Einstein.
