Interview with Mary Lockey

Published 2015-07-02.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy reading fiction, especially if it's set in the south and has to do with women, families, dogs...
I also enjoy reading the box scores of baseball and basketball games!
What is your writing process?
The majority of "Hey! It's Me, Putty" was written in longhand in six notebooks while I was on my front porch swing. When it was warm weather, of course. I also wrote while standing at my kitchen island. Then I would have to hurry and transcribe the scenes I'd written into the word processor because if I waited too long, I couldn't read my handwriting!

But the ideas for the plot would come at any time and in any place. I recall the idea for the love letters that Putty wrote for her friends (I can't say for whom, that would give too much away for those who haven't read the book) but that idea came while I was in the parking lot of the grocery store.
Describe your desk
Currently, my "desk" is a folding table that's about 4.5 feet long x 2.5 feet wide. It's cluttered at the moment with papers, notebooks, library books, pens, a dictionary and a pair of binoculars. It's in the den and I have great view of a big backyard. So I use the binoculars to watch the birds and occasionally my neighbor. Kidding.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love seeing what my characters are going to do or say. Sometimes they really surprise me. It's a bit like having real friends! Also, it would give me great joy if someone were to read "Hey! It's Me, Putty!" and feel God's great love.
What are you working on next?
I have a few scenes (and a lot of ideas) for a sequel to "Hey! It's Me, Putty!" This story will take place from September through Christmas. I've already decided to call it "The 'Ber' Months". In this book, Putty starts a new school year and makes a new friend named Vidalia, Hilda moves into the group home and Maggie meets the infamous Pastor Mike. I'm not far along with it at all, though.
