Interview with Melissa Lurquette

What are you working on next?
I am working on Book Two of the Davenport Trilogy, entitled "A Captivating Captive". This story delves into the youngest Davenport sibling, Amelia, as she embarks on an adventure to San Francisco. She encounters a ship's captain, and despite complications, they fall in love.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had no intentions of becoming a fiction author ... let alone an indie author. I wrote A Beautiful Bounty over a decade ago just for fun, and in 2017 when I was working to grow my own consulting business, I was looking for ways to supplement my income. I was digging around in old files and found that I had written this novel. For some reason, I didn't realize that I had actually completed the full story. It needed editing and some additional historical research, but with a little work, I managed to finalize the book. Of course, my confidence in my story was low, so I had some family members read it, just for fun. They told me it was just as good as any other romance novel they had read. They encouraged me to publish it. So, I designed a cover (having experience in graphic design), and figured out how to format it for Amazon. From there, I uploaded the book, and now I have to figure out how to promote it!
What is your writing process?
When I sit down to write, I don't like to have any distractions. My goal is to get something written, but don't put pressure on myself to get a certain amount finished. Whatever happens, happens. I will then go back and fix it up at a later date. I like to let something sit for a while before I re-read it and make changes. Getting some distance from it, helps to look at it more critically. At times, I will read a section out loud to see if the dialogue flows properly before I make edits.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
If I could just write for a living, I would! Even with a Masters level degree in Leadership, and over 15 years in business, my creative side is always tugging at my sleeve. I have been writing as a hobby/pastime since I was a child. I was told at a very early age that I had exceptional grammar and spelling. I play music (guitar), have a Bachelors degree in theatre, dabble in graphic design, and love to read. Indulging my creative side is part of writing. I love to imagine new stories, new characters, and new worlds. I have a long list of other ideas for future novels.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I don't remember the first story I ever wrote, but as a kid, I used to write poetry. I still remember one poem I wrote in elementary school for an assignment on "What would you like to be?":

I think I'd like to be a stream,
Splashing on a rock.
As it moves so swiftly on,
I'd hear some people talk.
As a stream I feel so good,
I feel so fresh and free.
Even though there's no one here,
That's what I'd like to be.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My free time is divided between playing music (guitar), watching movies, photography, graphic design, knitting, going on hikes with my dog, reading, and spending time with family. My favourite activity in the summer is to go on road trips or day trips to explore new places - always bringing my camera along. I am also trying to grow my consulting business, so spend a lot of time working on that. Essentially, I just like to keep myself busy and learning new things.
How do you approach cover design?
I like to design book covers just for practice. I have a number of book designs for genres that I don't even read. I just love to design. At one point, I was contemplating designing book covers for other indie authors, but haven't determined if that's something worth pursuing quite yet.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use iBooks, Kindle, and even Google Play. Whatever works!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I only published my book a month ago, so this remains to be seen. Smashwords has so far highlighted a few content formatting issues, which was invaluable to producing a high quality (premium) book.
