Interview with Monte Kline

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in small town in Illinois that I couldn't wait to get out of and move to the West -- to mountains, deserts, the ocean, and adventure in general. The culture of the factory towns around where I grew up reminded me of the adage that "5% of the people think, 15% of the people think they thing, and 80% of the people would rather die than think." Almost everyone I knew there was bound by their own self-limitations and lack of curiosity about anything outside their boring routine. I wanted to ask questions and challenge assumptions. I wanted to see what everyone else had seen but think what no one else had thought. That desire manifests in my writing and speaking style in asking the questions people are thinking about and answering them.
When did you first start writing?
At age 24 I was diagnosed with a serious cancer condition. Surgery and radiation largely destroyed my health until someone introduced me to nutritional cancer therapies. That rebuilt my health but burdened me to communicate what I had learned about health and nutrition, particularly as related to degenerative diseases. My first book, EAT, DRINK & BE READY, published in 1977, came out of that experience.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have just updated my 1978 best-selling book THE JUNK FOOD WITHDRAWAL MANUAL as an E-Book. I originally wrote this in about three weeks for the health food store market to give readers a simple plan for improving their diet and health. Back then I hoped it would promote my earlier full-length book, but it turned out to fill a unique niche and become a best-seller in its own right with 300,000 copies in print from 20 printings. However, after 35 years I found a lot things that needed updating based on new information about nutrition and health, as well as new products that no one had even heard of in 1978. The basic formula of the book is unchanged, though, with its presenting Nine Easy Food Substitutions and a 12-Week Withdrawal Program from junk food.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Though my first two books were published by a small publisher, I've found in more recent years that it is almost impossible to get published traditionally due to the huge number of manuscripts being submitted. Beyond that, however, I see traditional publishing as an "old wine skin" with E-publishing being the "new wine skin." Indie publishing eliminates most of the barriers to getting my work out there quickly.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love reducing a complicated topic to simple and understandable terms. There's no greater "high" for me than unpacking life-changing truth for the reader.
What are you working on next?
My next projects will be to update my two other small booklets, VITAMIN MANUAL FOR THE CONFUSED and THE SICK & TIRED MANUAL into E-book format. After that I will be writing a book on the remote food and nutrition assessment method my Pacific Health Center clinics use with clients around the world.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love hiking and rockhounding here in Central and Eastern Oregon. At home I enjoy a great mystery or action/adventure movie.
What is your writing process?
I believe in first creating a skeleton and then putting flesh on it. The skeleton is my outline. I will start with a very general outline -- essentially a Table of Contents and then go back and create an amplified outline with the details. This gives a clear and logical organization to the book. Then writing from that amplified outline is the easy part -- just putting flesh on the skeleton.
What do you read for pleasure?
Though I neither hunt nor fish, when I want to really relax and de-stress, I love reading the outdoor humor of Patrick McManus.
