Interview with David. B. Reynolds-Moreton

What is your writing process?
The idea often comes to me after checking up on the latest science data – the concept is then translated to fit in with an alien world or situation, and the fingers start tapping!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
As a young lad during the war, I would buy Rover, Wizard and Hotspur comics – the sci-fi stories were the only ones which held my interest. I was fascinated by the concept of aliens invading us – one of which was taking our water! And another was stealing our cow and bull breeding stock.
How do you approach cover design?
Usually, as the story is written, I get mental image pictures of the various scenes as I go along, I then use a paint program to build the cover picture from what I think is the most appropriate scene applicable to the story.
What are your favorite books, and why?
Mainly the stories by the old masters – Asimov, Sturgeon, Clarke, Russell etc, plus science journals - not much interest in ordinary novels, also don’t have the time!
What do you read for pleasure?
As above! plus the odd biography, if the writer has had an interesting life.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Don't have an e-book reader, so it's the computor.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Smashwords, without a doubt. 'Paper' publishing is a pain in the neck if you are not already published - it's a catch twenty-two situation.
Describe your desk
Somewhat cluttered - ideas on bits of paper - rough drafts - empty coffee mugs.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on the outskirts of a little village in Devon, which had no influence on my writing, except for the comics I read. It wasn't until I went into industry and became hooked on science ( I had to, for my job!) that ideas began to formulate.
When did you first start writing?
Sci-fi began In 1998. (prior to that it was electronics etc.)
I had an argument with the librarian about the quality of the 'new' sci-fi, which I found a bit 'silly', containing sex, politics and bad language, and not very scientific. I had already had an idea for a story, and that incident in the library prompted me to write it. My wife, who doesn't like sci-fi - loved it! as did many friends who read it. I then spent more time printing and binding than writing - thank God for Smashwords!!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The 'pain' of publishing the 'paper' way. Too time consuming, and if you are not already published - you don't stand a chance as I see it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Running with the story idea - sometimes I have no idea where it will go - and that's part of the fun. Nice to get lost in a world with a different set of problems to this one!
What do your fans mean to you?
Didn't know I had any! Always pleased to receive comments from readers - I can always improve if readers care to comment on a story - so have a go!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
In sci-fi, Yes, and some say it was the best - 'The Seed Garden'. I think that one gave me the most satisfaction, especially after the re-write. It starts off like many other stories - an astronaut stranded on an alien planet, with no hope of survival, but then it stretches his tenacity to the limits, and then some. The story may seem a little far fetched to some, but it is based on sound provable scientific facts - more and more accepted as time goes by.
One review said...'the end will stay with you long after you have finished the book' Can't argue with that!!
