Interview with K. L. Cottrell

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I get out of bed everyday because I love life. Life is hard a lot of the time and it can really bring you down, but I tend to be optimistic. I wake up wanting to spend time with my husband, write, talk to people, listen to my favorite music, eat something delicious - I love sleep and rest in general, but there's just so much to enjoy in the world. I think if you're too unhappy with your life to even want to get out of bed, a change in the way you do things needs to be made. Even something small will help; I say all the time to find something to smile about or be thankful for!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I remember the first story I ever wrote that actually meant something to me. I think it's because it wasn't strictly fictitious - it was based on real pain I was feeling, and you don't easily forget pain like that. It was also the first story of mine that anyone read, which was actually an accident! A memorable experience all around.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing (which I do pretty often) I read, of course, but almost all of my free time goes to my husband. He's my BFF. We usually go places, watch TV or movies, or play video games together. I also listen to a lot of music. I looove music - possibly because another huge love of mine is dance.
What is your writing process?
The only thing I do consistently is write down every single thing I think of for the story. That's not to say I sit down before I start the story and map out every detail, though, because that's never worked for me. I usually write a summary of what I want, then get started, and as I go along I write down random things that occur to me. My documents always have the story started at the top, and then several blank pages after where I stopped, I've got bits and pieces of stuff. There are character lines and specific phrasings that have popped into my head, and random descriptions of the weather or someone's appearance that I want to use but haven't thought of a spot for yet, and lists of songs that have inspired me. I write whole future scenes, too, even if I don't know how I'm going to make my way to them.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is a new adult romance that talks about so many things! How heartache doesn't have to be carried by one person alone, how you can't plan your life out to a T, how you can let love in even when you aren't looking for it or you think it's something you can't touch. Those characters were so incredible and so heart-wrenching to write - I loved it!

My other works include the Light Trilogy, which is a good-versus-evil, romance/urban fantasy thing; another new adult romance that's about two people who desperately need hope and find it in one another; and a paranormal romance novella, in which some things just don't stay dead....
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is that I get to create anything I want in a really fun way. I can tell all kinds of stories for all kinds of people in all kinds of situations. It's absolutely thrilling to be able to take the tiniest bit of inspiration and turn it into something I can hold in my hands and come back to repeatedly and share with others.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
When it comes to finding new eBooks to read, I do one of two things: I go to the free section of the iBooks store and see if there's anything attention-grabbing, or I look to my author Facebook page, where my friends are always posting about their books or books they love. If someone didn't have the same access to authors that I do, I would say to just go where the books are and pick out some that look interesting. Amazon or the Barnes & Noble website - or, like I used to do, go to a physical bookstore and just walk the aisles to find books that look cool, and then write them down and go home to buy the eBook.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My phone is my favorite thing to read my books on, only because I always, always have it with me.
What do your fans mean to you?
The fans I have are just...wonderful. Helpful. Supportive. They range from family and friends to people I met on my author Facebook or Goodreads page. Every single person who enjoys what I write is invaluable to me - but I have a confession: my mom and husband are my favorite fans!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been invaluable. I still have a long way to go with my writing career, but Smashwords has given me a wonderful, stress-free start. I love everything from the eBook prep guideline to the ease with which I can revise my files. I'd recommend Smashwords to anyone, and I have!
