Interview with M.T. Ellis

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
About ten years ago I started writing a memoir-slash-biography about my boyfriend who committed suicide. I never finished it and probably won't look at it again. It was great to get things off my chest but it was too personal to publish.
What is your writing process?
I like to write down everything I can think of. Then, when I have enough random ideas, I try and find a way to join them together.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember the first story I ever read, but I remember Bryce Courtenay's Potato Factory series and The Power of One series were mind-opening. They were quite dark, but there was always a great moral to the story.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love crime thrillers but I'm currently trying new genres so I can learn to write in different ways. I just wish I had more time to read!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle but I'm really into Audible audiobooks right now.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
My mother! She shamelessly promotes me and forces people to buy my book, ha! Thanks mum! Doing a blog tour and giving out free eBooks was also quite helpful.
Describe your desk
It's a huge wooden thing. I tried to paint it and sand it back to make it look all antique and distressed. Unfortunately, it was laminated chipboard so that didn't end well. My husband was mortified at my attempt, but I think it looks good!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was an army brat so I grew up all over the east-coast of Australia. I remember my dad reading Robinson Caruso to me as a kid and I did a lot of MS-Readathons in primary school to raise money for MS. I used to pick short books to get my reading quota up, ha! All of that early reading must have taught me a lot because I didn't read much in my twenties and I only got serious about writing when I was 31.
