Interview with M.T. O'Neil

When did you first start writing?
As a kid, and I used to enter any writing contest I could. I loved to read, and writing became second nature.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm currently working on "Frosting On The Keyboard," a novel, rather than the anthologies I usually do. It's about a social worker who grew up in foster care, who metes out punishment to some of his clients whom he feels are horrible parents. I'm still trying to decide if I will include Detective Ristrom, a recurring character of mine, in this story or not.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Hoping to earn enough from my hobby, that I can eventually quit my day job.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
At Smashwords, they truly want to help and promote the authors, while at one major online book retailer, it seemed to be more about control and ownership of the authors. I would highly recommend Smashwords to anyone starting out as an ebook author.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing has always helped me relax, and forget reality for a little while.
What do your fans mean to you?
I appreciate any fans out there, and hope that if they take the time to leave reviews, that they are honest in doing so. Even bad reviews help sales, and I enjoy any feedback. It helps me know what people want to read, what they do and don't like about my efforts.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
It's not so much inspiration, as being pounced on by hungry pets.

How do you approach cover design?
I have used both stock photos and my own in the past. My very favorite was the photo on "Minutes Of Mayhem." It is a large tree up in the ghost town of Silver City, Idaho (winter population is 2). I took the photo after sitting to rest several minutes on the tree roots, after hiking up to the cemetery it sits by. I'm quite sure it was used as a hanging tree at some point, just because of its location. The photo still fascinates me.
