Interview with Mystery and Horror, LLC

What's the story behind your latest book?
The latest book we've done is Strangely Funny II, which is a continuation of the series. Strangely Funny books are full of our favorite kind of story, weird, wonderful, funny, paranormal stories. We believe there is a solid market for this type of anthology. Who wouldn't en joy reading a story about an immigration office for demons faced with a pipeline company that wants to run a line through the portal? When I see a story about a bigfoot writer trying to make a book deal, or a safe house for the undead, I have to see how that ends. I doubt that anyone will like every story in one of these books, but with more than 20 stories in the book you'll get a lot of laughs for your money.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Our best book sales are after we have participated in a convention panel, or spoken at an event. It really helps to get out there and meet people. The people listening to us may purchase a paperback at the event, but the real difference is a spike in downloads the week following a personal appearance.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are AWESOME! I cannot stress enough how much it matters when someone says something nice about one of our books. A fan who takes the time to post a comment or rate a book are worth their weight in gold. The ones who come out to hear one of us speak or participate in an event make the effort we put into publishing worthwhile. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Describe your desk
My desk is always messy, covered with books I'm reading, my WiP an the essential writing tools. I don't like anyone to "clean" my desk. The clutter is organized the way I want it. I can pick up where I left off when I return.
What are you working on next?
We have several projects in the works right now. Later this year Mystery and Horror, LLC will be coming out with a pair of anthologies History and Horror, Oh My! and History and Mystery, Oh My! We hope to make them available as a set at a slightly lower price than you would get buying both individually.
When did you first start writing?
Mystery and Horror, LLC is a micro-press that began as a writing partnership between Gwen Mayo and Sarah Glenn. We needed to legally organize for tax reasons. Shortly after the company was formed, each of us lost our publisher. We decided to take our skills and start doing our own books, our way. Since then we have done collections of short stories, anthologies, and an award winning book of awful monster jokes by Monstermatt Patterson.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has a great platform for getting out books into online bookstores. It is great to only have to format once and have it appear in so many places. The guidebooks are a major plus. Anyone who can read and follow directions can create a professional quality ebook.
