Interview with Sheila Holmes

When did you first start writing?
When I was in 4th grade, the school put out a book (actually bound and looked quite professional, or so I thought at the time) for all students in the school to purchase. I can't say I actually remember the price, but for some reason a dollar comes to mind. Anyway... I was never much into school activities, so I was unaware until a number of students who had purchased the book told me they really liked my stories. I had no idea what they were talking about until one of them handed me the book turned to the pages that had them. And sure enough, there were two stories I had written as assignments in class. The teacher had told us to write two stories, one about our favorite activity we could ever remember doing during the summer just past. The other was to be the worst activity during that same time frame. All I had done was fulfill a class assignment, but the teacher apparently deemed them both good enough to include in the book. Hey, who knew?!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
When I was teaching high school, the principal was in my class one period to do an evaluation, which he did periodically. When the class was over, he sat down with me to review his evaluation. The thing that stood out most in my mind was that he told me what I really did was put on five "performances" daily. He told me that he now understood why my classes were always full. It was like going to see a play or movie. Very entertaining! He told me that he would like to someday see me write a novel or two and channel some of that drama into them. He never knew that twenty years after his suggestion that I would start doing just that. After completing the first novel, I started looking on the internet for publishing companies. But, it felt like I would have to jump through so many hoops to make it happen, that I felt overwhelmed. So, I had an ebook cover designed instead, and published it myself. (That was eight books ago, and the ninth is in progress.) I'm so glad I took this route!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Bottom line... when I'm writing, I get lost in it. The trials and duties of the day somehow slide into the background and it's almost as if the story becomes the "reality" in my life. It's magical! But even more, I love getting the privilege of either overtly or covertly sharing, in my novels, Jesus with people and His Amazing Gift of Salvation. I feel very blessed!
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a new storyline about a young woman, Grace, who has been a bride for only hours. Then, as she and her new groom are exiting the reception parking lot, in anticipation of their honeymoon, their car is hit by a careless driver, leaving Grace's groom dead on impact. Her "happily ever after" has just been stolen! How will she carry on? Can she ever, ever, EVER forgive the man who killed her husband?!
Who are your favorite authors?
I am crazy about Frank Peretti, Ted Dekker, and Chautona Havig. There are no doubt others, but these are the three that come to mind right now. They are all Christian novelists who have captured my mind and imagination.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
About two years ago, I was preparing dinner one night and I was completely bored with the menu. I just felt like we ate about the same five or six meals over and over. So, the next day I got online and selected two menus that sounded different and exciting. Since then (like I said, two years now) I have followed this twice-weekly new recipe thing almost without exception. My husband has been so excited about it, that he now prompts me weekly with his question, "What are we going to try this week?! I can hardly wait to see what it is!" It's been sheer joy. And... just recently I've started a whole new Christian romance novel based in a culinary school, where romance is on the menu.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
It's not a hard process at all. I simply go on my e-reader, key in "Christian fiction", then start downloading like crazy from the FREE novels. It often turns out that I get hooked by an author or story and I continue buying within that scope (author/story) until I've completed everything they've written.
What is your writing process?
I'm at that stage in life where I don't sleep well at night. So, when I lie there awake at night and know it's going to be hours before any sleep takes over, my mind wanders. I create plot after plot. In the morning, I add to my list the new storylines and possible titles. Each time I complete a previous story, I jump to the list and grab one, then start writing away again.
How do you approach ebook cover design?
My first novel, I paid a company to design its cover for me. They did a fabulous job, but it cost me several hundreds of dollars. So, I enlisted the help of my son-in-law (IT specialist) to help me design the next cover. It cut the cost down tremendously, but I still had to pay for the graphics and I gave him a fee for his help. By the third or fourth book, I decided to try it on my own. It's a learning process, but I've come to love it. And now, my covers are EXACTLY what I want, and the cost is almost nothing to speak of.
