Interview with Tracey Howard

What is your writing process?
My writing process.... I generally have a thought or image floating through my mind that demands to be put on paper. So I grab my notebook, a sharpened pencil, and let the words out.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book of poetry I read from cover to cover was by Rod McKuen. I believe it was "Celebrations of The Heart" and it just grabbed me. For the first time I was reading poetry that I understood and that captured my imagination as well as my attention. I absolutely loved it and it made me want to be able to use simple words and images to capture others in the same way.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I think it would be easier to answer what are my least favorite! I love reading in all forms. How else could you go to foreign lands and magical dreamscapes while sitting on the couch?
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything! I am most attracted to twisty thrillers and who-done-it? but I never turn down a good read in general.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle that is abused regularly
Describe your desk
Large, bulky, and currently a catch-all for everything you walk through the door with! I have hopes of getting it cleared off and into the office at some point.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in small town America. I rode bikes, played outside from dawn to dusk, got skinned knees, and dirt under my nails and in my hair from sandbox fights. I grew up believing in happy ever afters and the basic kindness of people in general. I think it shows in some of my poems the hopes and dreams of a raised dreamer.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in middle school.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My friends. Some of whom are already published and others who just support me as friends.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy in writing, for me, is knowing I have touched someone. Maybe I gave them a new viewpoint to think about, or made them smile, or even cry. Just being able to touch a person's mind and heart is the biggest thrill for me
Who are your favorite authors?
I love everything from Stephen King to Nora Roberts and all the ones in between!
