Interview with Nadine Mazzola

When did you first start writing?
I felt the inspiration and desire to write after becoming a Certified Forest Therapy Guide in 2015. I was feeling so connected and inspired by guiding forest therapy (forest bathing) walks and I wanted to share the stories coming from my time in the forest with my dog Juliet. Listening to Robin Wall Kimmerer's book Braiding Sweetgrass and in particular, the chapter Witness to the Rain, was an inspiration in finding my own authentic writing voice. I began writing my first story almost immediately after finishing Robin's book.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Love, love for the forest and my dog, Juliet. While this book is a guide about forest bathing with your dog with lots of "how to" tips, it’s also a bit of a love story about our relationships with our dogs, the forests we walk in, and the land we live on. I offer guided forest bathing walks for my work but I also have a personal practice of forest bathing and my dog, Juliet is a big part of that practice. It began simply because I did not want to leave her behind. In reality she has had a huge roll in deepening my personal forest bathing practice by becoming a part of it in so many ways: reminding me to simply be, to use my senses and my favorite, to pause often along the trail.

While this books began with me wanting to share our story, through the journey of writing it, I also realized this was not only a self care practice for ourselves but also a self care practice for our dogs. They also need time to wander and focus on their senses. They also receive restorative benefits from forest bathing time and their relaxation response is activated that same way our is. While there are many health benefits that I share, this books is also about remembering our connection to and relationship with the land.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always been entrepreneurial and come from a family of entrepreneurs. Creating the design for this book (both the print and electronic versions) has been a wonderful creative process for me. Yes, I have previous experience in the self publishing process from past work experience and that had been a very big help. One of the other big reasons is the creative freedom that being an indie author brings throughout the entire creative process. I have to say that I have really enjoyed this freedom.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Ahh, Smashwords, thank you. They provide an amazing platform and have to say I just love the way Mark Coker and the Smashwords team guides indie authors through this process of publishing our books. Thank you mark for all the reminders to pause and grab a cup of tea! It really helps and better yet, it makes me smile. Thank you to the whole Smashwords team!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy in writing is the ability it gives me to share the story of the love in my heart.
What do your fans mean to you?
I'd just like to say a very big thank you to all my readers. You guys rock!
