Interview with Nayab Naseer

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
A writer is always a prisoner of his experience. I grew up in Cochin, a quaint little port town that has since then transformed itself into a wannabe megalopolis. The city;s rich heritage, vibrant culture and cosmopolitan outlook has obviously influenced my writing.
When did you first start writing?
My first book, a travelogue on Kochi, was published when I was in 10th standard. Shortly afterwards, I made an attempt at a novel, but now I thank my lucky stars that no publisher published it. My exposure was too limited at that time to do justice to a novel. During my college days I used to write articles for local newspapers and journals, and edited the college magazine as well.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My upcoming novel "The Waters of the Periyar" is a love story with a difference, with a strong socio-political theme, set in a action thriller mode.
What are you working on next?
Plenty of ideas - a history of Kochi in the mold of James Michener's "Texas," tops the list, but nothing is finalized as of now.
Who are your favorite authors?
James A Michener, Irving Wallace, Jeffery Archer, Glenn Meade.... the list is pretty exhaustive.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
writing!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
reading and traveling!
Please list a couple of your favorite books, and why?
1. James A Michener's Texas, it is a historical novel that brilliantly showcases the triumph of human spirit and the never-say-die attitude that makes America great.
2. Glenn Meade's Sands of Sakkara: a spy story with love thrown in, set in World War II England. This may seem a pretty strange choice, but somehow, I can relate to this book like no other.
