Interview with Nakeesha Cluse

Published 2017-06-21.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing as a young teen. While most kids were out playing or watching TV, I was either reading V.C. Andrews books or writing my own. The summer I got my first typewriter, I spent hours creating stories. Writting has always been my outlet and my passion.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My third book, Wicked Game, is about Nicolette Thorne, a strong woman who overcame abuse and self hate by reinventing herself through a marriage of convenience. In doing so, Nicolette built a wall around herself to keep from being hurt again. The hero in the book, David Morales somehow penetrates her wall and Nicolette is forced to deal with issues in her past. It's a story about the power of love; the good and the dark side of it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Fear. For most of my life, I let fear control me. Even though I loved writing, I wouldn't let anyone see my work. I feared the rejection of others; basically I thought I wasn't' good enough. For years, I would start a story but never finish it until one summer when I was injured and unable to work. With nothing but time on my hand, I began writing my first book, Again. It was a book about a woman who got a second chance to fulfill her life-long dream. I was in a place in my life where I had nowhere else to go but up. The pain I suffered from my injury out weighed my fear of failure. I had nothing to lose. When I finished the book, I let my husband read it. I remember feeling sick just thinking about the possibility that he might not like it. His approval gave me the courage to publish it. When I got my first review from a total stranger, saying that they actually liked my work... I was thrilled! Each step after that gave me a little more confidence. I'm on an incredible journey now and I remind myself each step; each day; each book is going to get better.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I love the freedom it gives me as a writer. It gives me a platform in which to introduce my work to thousands of people. It's amazing really.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love being able to create interesting characters and worlds with the power of my imagination.
What do your fans mean to you?
I am thankful for anyone who reads my books and enjoys them. It gives me the encouragement to continue. I know not everyone is going to like my work but when someone reads my story and tells me they can relate to it or it touched them, I am thrilled!
What are you working on next?
I am working on part two of Wicked Game. It's called Good Girl Gone Bad. It continues the story of David and Nicolette as they begin a new life in Atlanta with their son. It also reveals a little more about Nicolette and explains why she is the way she is. I am exciting about it.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love reading James Patterson, Zane and V. C. Andrews. All of these authors have a way of pulling the reader in and holding them captive with the power of storytelling.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My faith in God, my family and my strong believe that there are blessings embedded in everyday; you just have to make a conscious effort to look for them. I remind myself of my blessings daily.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to read and surf the web. Spending time with my family is always important. We live in Colorado so we get outdoors a lot. I am from California so I miss the ocean like crazy, especially in the winter.
What is your writing process?
Music is a big part of my writing process. I like to visualize my stories as if they were movies then I put together a soundtrack that coincides with different parts of the story. I find playing music softly in the background really helps me get into the zone .
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
when I was in middle school I was hooked on VC Andrews. Her novel Heavenly was my favorite. I remember devouring her books. I couldn't get enough. One summer all I did was read; sun up til sun down.
How do you approach cover design?
This is a tuff one. I don't know if I've figured it out yet. Sometimes I create the cover myself and other times I've used fivver. Let's just say this is a work in progress for me!

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?

Browsing the categories that interest me the most.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When I was in elementary school I wrote a short story about a crooked man. Can't remember all the details but my mom and teacher were really impressed.
Where do I see myself ten years from now?
I always hated this question in interviews but I think it's a good one. I am a firm believer that a people without a vision or dream perish. In my case, I lost sight of my dream and drifted for years, trying to find my purpose. Little had I known it was right there all along. I was born to write. I knew it as a child, and I finally accept it now. So ten years from now I will be writing. Now whether or not I'll be able to make a living doing it, God only knows . I am just determined to hold on to my dream... No matter what!
