Interview with Nicholas J. Finch

What is your e-reading device of choice?
I enjoy using the Kindle because of it's flexibility and the feeling that I am holding a substantial 'pad' device in my hand. Being able to adjust brightness, font, and color are very useful depending on where I am reading, ambient lighting, and time of day.
Describe your desk
Working surrounded by images that inspire my current ideas, is seriously the only way to go! So I have walls covered in pictures, notes about research, tabs with things to remember, and lists of stuff still to do! It's a crowded desk, but it's my nest!
How do you approach cover design?
I want something that is relevant to the story but which breaks away from the more typical imagery of book covers for gay erotic fiction. For me, it's not about reinforcing stereotypes, or expectations, it's about breaking them.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Losing myself in the words.
What are you working on next?
There's a full length novel on the way, an anthology of short stories, and a book of poetry!

There is plenty to come.

And plenty more after that!
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh there's so many...

In no particular order:

J.R.R. Tolkien
Frank Herbert
Oliver Bowden
Lee Child
Patrick O'Brian
Michael Shaara
Tom Clancy
Edgar Allan Poe
Michael Crichton
Ellis Peters

It could get to be a long list!!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Usually reading, plotting the next book, researching the next book, taking photographs, designing jewelry, and learning new languages.

Yes, I'm a very busy person really!
What is your writing process?
Grab that idea, work with it, shape it, research it, write it, tinker some more, make it more real, keep it steady, edit again, and then edit some more!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Growing up in California, both in and around Los Angeles, I have been influenced by the obvious visual imagery of so famous a city, hence so much of what I write is set here. I will never tire of this place, and the infinite variety it offers to everyone who comes here.
When did you first start writing?
I was around 10 years old, and I wanted to express myself in new ways. From there it became an obsession.

Beginning with a series of emails sent back and forth between the UK and the USA, this novella is the story of how two men, one a Los Angeles detective and the other an Oxford research student, find themselves drawn to each other despite leading very different lives on opposite sides of the world.
