Interview with Nikolas Ridout

Published 2016-01-15.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Cape Town South Africa. Yes it has influenced this trilogy a lot. My maternal grandfather was in the South African War and he would tell me stories of when he was young boy how he would carry messages from the Boers outside Kimberley to their families inside. I would sit entranced, listening, he was only six years old. My upbringing was frightfully colonial, both my Father and Mother were in the Second World War. It was only only later that I became interested in this piece of history. This war was the first Media War, what happened in Cape Town today was in the headlines of newspapers in London the next morning. Unfortunately all the correspondents and all the editors of those newspapers were British. It is this war that taught everyone the value of propaganda.
When did you first start writing?
Basically when I was seven I had my first article in a school magazine. Then later in Junior High I won the All English Prize and a little cup. I was very chuffed. My Father was a massive influence on my life. He foresaw a career in Accountancy and I did articles, which I despised. I ran away to the Air Force. Long story short I landed up with IBM and that was it. It was only much later that the urge to write hit me. I have always been a prodigious reader and I was in book shop. I was teaching IT at a private college at the time, had classes full of teenagers. Picked a book up on the Boer War and read about the hanging of a 16 year old boy. I was dealing with sixteen year old kids every day, full of life, full of fun, and yes, I was hooked. I wanted to know what kind of mind it takes to hang children.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is a story about courage in spite of adversary. It is a story about winning and mostly it is a story about compassion. A young Boer boy sees his best friend hanged, his farm destroyed and his Father murdered. His Mother and Sister are taken up into a concentration camp. He is left with nothing. Everything he and his family had worked for are literally eradicated from the earth. Unfortunately he is very good looking and British Officer has been watching him. The story takes you through real truths on what went on, the money, the Masons and the intrigue behind the 'Hit Squads' that hunted the Boers down like foxes. The help of a Scot, an ex DCI from Edinburgh. A Professor from London who believes he is the first of the Indigo Children A friendship with a FID (Field Intelligence Officer) that had been ordered to to hunt him down and shoot on sight. Change his life.
