Interview with Nicola C. Matthews

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The very first story that I "tried" to write was a story called WHITE LIGHTNING and was about a girl who received a magical white horse for her birthday. The horse was named White Lightning and had the ability to take her to whatever fantasy land she could dream of.

The very first story that I actually wrote to completion was a romantic thriller called Big Dreams and Nightmares. It was about a fourteen year old girl who fell in love with the oldest son of her father's latest girlfriend. Turns out he was not what he appeared and she ended up in a parallel universe trying to find out how to escape.
What actually got you into writing? What was your inspiration for sitting down and writing that first story?
I always loved to read. I first fell in love with the written word when I was about six, when I started a yearlong reading love affair with Dr. Seuss. When I discovered that I could make up and write down my own stories to amuse myself, I quickly realized that I would rather create my own worlds and characters than I had to read what others had written. It just progressed from there. I originally wrote just to amuse myself. As time went on and more people read my stories and I received positive feedback, I discovered that I wanted to share my creations with everyone.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I first started in the trade publishing business when I was fifteen. I spent ten years sending out query letters, manuscripts, studying the different publishers and trying to land an agent. Back before there was such a thing as Facebook, when social media was just getting started, I had a huge following. I was heavily into RPGs (role-playing games) and was using my social media platforms to keep my followers entertained by writing short stories based off of the various characters I had created in the RP groups. A fellow writer told me about a POD company called LuLu and how he had self-published his erotic stories through them. I spent two years researching and studying how to produce print books and then ebooks once those became available. I had an audience who loved my work and who encouraged me to make full length novels available to them. After ten years of getting rejection letters, I knew I had a market and going through a trade publisher wasn't the answer. So I took the leap into the indie waters and have been treading water ever since.
Who are your favorite authors? Who has influenced and inspired your writing over the years?
Wow, I have so many authors that I absolutely adore. The authors who have inspired me the most, my mentors if you will, are Anne Rice, Laurell K. Hamilton, V.C. Andrews, Stephen King, Michael Crichton, Robin Cook, and Charlaine Harris.
How much of your books are real/based on true experiences and/or people?
The action that is going on in my books is totally fabricated. With that said, the vast majority of the characters in my books are based on real people, either those who I know in real life, or someone famous who has inspired me in some way or who I greatly admire.

The BEFORE THE SUN RISES SERIES is based off of characters that a friend and I created when we were both heavily into RPGs. Ethereal Oscurita is based off of one of my characters. SFC Steven Hall holds a very special place in my heart because that character is coined after the same friend who got me into the RPGs. The vampire Stealth is coined after the real-life television personality Don Henrie. Various other characters in the entire series are based on real people who I role-played with in several online games.

The characters from my current WIP, Hell’s Ballad, are all coined after the members of Black Veil Brides. The members of the band in the book have the same birthdays as BVB, a lot of the tour dates and cities in the book coincide with BVB’s 2015 tour dates. A lot of the injuries that the boys have suffered over the years have even been incorporated into the book. I’ve tried to capture some of their habits and mannerisms into the characters as well.

As a writer, the biggest compliment I can pay someone is to incorporate them into my work somehow. So these characters not only feel more real to me, they start to feel more real to my audience. These characters are special to me because they are all coined after someone who means something to me, so I sincerely hope that I never offend anyone by coining a character after them. I do it because that person meant so much to me, influenced me in some way, or inspired me in such a way that I wanted to thank them by immortalizing them as a character. For me, there is no greater compliment or thank you that I could possibly give someone. And I think that by doing this, it really helps my readers to connect not only with my characters, but also the people that the characters were coined after.
What do your fans mean to you?
I think most writers write for the sheer joy of it. My characters all mean something to me, the stories they tell. Whenever I have readers who enjoy and get as invested in these characters and their stories as much as I am, that's just the best feeling in the world. I wouldn't be a writer without my readers. They mean everything to me. While we often say we write for ourselves, that honestly couldn't be further from the truth. We write to be read, and that means we have to have someone who is willing to take a chance not only on us, but on our work as well. My fans are everything. I wouldn't be a writer if I did not have them. Their continued support and encouragement mean the world to me.
What are you working on next?
Right now I have 4 additional books in the works, the third book in the Before the Sun Rises Series, two follow up novels to Vindictus, and another standalone novella which I hope proves to be quite the little erotic adventure.
