Interview with Nic Weissman

When and why did you start writing?
I have been writing as long as I can remember, but always small things for myself. Only like two years back I decided to start attacking larger projects, even a standard length novel.
Give us some backstory behind The Orb of Wrath. Where and when did you write it?
It all started about 15 years ago. I spent a year to write a large and detailed fantasy world. I defined more than 700 cities for example. Then about a year ago I was flipping through it and I decided to try to get some characters alive in that environment to be able to share it.
Have any particular novels or writers influenced your writing?
This one cannot be very original. You see, I write fantasy. In this genre, there is Tolkien and then everybody else. He, not only founded a genre, but also wrote one of the best (let’s say) three books of the XX century. The classic D&D structure is also all over my work. In terms of my other interests, they vary widely. One of my favorite authors is Asimov.
You have quite a number of reviews, what kind of feedback are you getting from your readers?
I am overwhelmed about the positive feedback. Let me give you two examples from two bloggers and authors:
‘‘The Orb of Wrath is a compelling, well-written and meticulously crafted epic fantasy novel. Nic Weissman has proven himself to be a gifted storyteller with a vivid imagination and world-building skills.’’
Author Peg Glover. Blogger in
‘‘It is a fantasy, one of my favorite genres. I found the sentences lyrical. Everything flowed, nothing jarring. It is easy to become caught up in the beauty of this work.’’
Author Jordan Elizabeth
“In the manner of great fantasy, The Orb of Wrath by Nic Weissman keeps his plot spinning, full of sub-plots, intrigue and the magic of other lands. (…) Follow the words of Nic Weissman as he builds wonderful scenes, interesting characters and a story of true adventure in another world. No detail is too small as this world is staged, as two young men who have always been there for each other stand side by side on the greatest adventure of their lives.”

This is what readers are saying:
“Author Nic Weissman is an exciting breath of fresh area in the world of Fantasy. (…) The Orb of Wrath doesn’t waste any time getting you into a very fast-paced adventure in the spirit of R.A. Salvatore or Margaret Weis/Tracy Hickman with a foundation of an ancient foundation of a battle between Black and Silver Dragons! (…) He tops many of their contributors in the depths of his story, a true Picasso of wordsmithing.”
‘‘It’s extremely exciting to read, I literally couldn’t stop reading it. It kind of gets you far far away from your boring everyday life with the epic scenes, picturesque views, dragons, magic, knights, elves and ogres… And it is also written so beautifully! Thanks a lot for the great time I’ve had reading this amazing book! ’’
‘‘This was a great book. Full of intrigue and a group of diverse characters that it’s hard not to like. With everything from action to underhanded politics this book will leave you waiting for the sequel. Can´t wait to see where this group’s next adventure takes them. ’’
‘‘Amazing book! Great character development and an even better story build-up. I was so excited at the end that I didn't want to put it down. There's a little bit of everything in The Orb of Wrath; from vampires to romance! Can't wait for book #2. ’’
‘‘This was an excellent read, fast moving and full of twists and a very enjoyable plot. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.’’
‘‘This was an awesome story...I do love a good fantasy!!! As a reader, I was taken away to distant lands where a myriad of characters awaited. There was plenty of action, adventure and intrigue. I highly recommend it to others!! ’’
If you could jump into the world of your favorite book, who would you be and what would you do?
I think I would go to the future. I would love to visit human colonies in distant stars. But it is difficult to pick one thing. The beauty of books is that you jump to all many different times, characters and landscapes. Today you are a pirate and tomorrow a soldier.
Which fictional character would you like to take to dinner and why?
Somebody smart like Ender Wiggin who could also talk about the wonders of the future.
What section of a bookstore do you go to first?
Travel guides. I love travelling. Also great formats, I mean pictures books.
I do have a problem with bookstores. I try to go in every time I have the chance, because after I am in I have big troubles not to buy a lot of stuff. I mean much more that I have time to read.
If you could combine the storylines of two books, which ones would they be?
I think it would be cool to have Atreyu and Luck Dragons in the Middle Earth. :-)
Tell me one thing about each of the four seasons you like. It can be anything.
Winter = the excuse to use the fireplace
Spring = the smell of fields and the boost in own hormones and morale.
Summer = The sun!
Fall = The amazing colors of the landscape in the Northeast of US.
What sound or noise do you love? What about hate?
I love birds chirping. I find it so relaxing. I hate the noise of a hard brush against the floor. It is very weird. Anybody else will hate things like chalk against the blackboard or fork against knife, but not me. I don’t mind those.
Any advice for aspiring authors?
This self-publishing thing is a new paradigm; a miracle, even. Any aspiring writer today can (for sure) become a published writer. If you are passionate about writing, just go for it. But you need to know that writing a great book is only half of the work; marketing it is a full time job by itself. So, spend some time beforehand on how you will tackle that piece of the challenge.
