Interview with Mary Oluonye

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in both Nigeria and the United States and have always lived among people of different cultures, nationalities and ethnic backgrounds. I would say that growing up the way that I did accounts for my global perspective and the keen interest I have in people, places, cultures and traditions.
When did you first start writing?
One of my favorite and earliest memories is that of reading stacks of books and writing short stories in my bedroom during the long rainy season in Nigeria. I've always loved reading ... anything - fiction and non-fiction. Writing seemed to happen naturally.
What books have you published?
I have written country profiles for children for Lerner Publishing/Carolrhoda Books on the countries of Nigeria, South Africa and Madagascar. I have also self-published three other books: "Garrett Augustus Morgan: Businessman, Inventor, Good Citizen," and "The Day The Library Didn't Open" (about Daylight Saving Time), co-written with Virginia K. Schoelch. "Madam C.J. Walker: Inventor, Entrepreneur, Millionaire" is my latest book, published in 2014 as an ebook.
What is your goal with respect to writing?
I write to educate children about people, places, cultures and traditions other than their own, with the goal of instilling children with a desire to learn about others, and an understanding of how people are different yet similar in many ways, no matter where they live. I also write to inform children of noteworthy people in the past, as well as contemporary figures, and show how these men and women worked hard to achieve their goals and dreams, and in the process helped to better life for many.
Are you working on anything new?
I always am. There is so much to write about, alas ... so little time! Right now I am focusing on a number of biographies for children.
Do your write for adults?
Not yet. Maybe soon. I've got some ideas that have been hanging around in my head for years.
What do you do when you are not writing?
I actually have a full-time job as a children's services associate at the Shaker Heights Public Library in Ohio. I am also a frequent reviewer for School Library Journal. Plus, I take guitar lessons.
Do you have a website?
