Interview with Jane Bishop
Published 2016-01-29.
Describe your desk
I have desks everywhere. I write at the table, on my couch, on my phone. As of today I have not real desk to write on.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on a small town in Ontario called Treadwell. There was not very much to do in that town and we even made a few jokes that there was only a single stop sign that we were very proud of. For that reason, I had a very active imagination. I used to think of different scenarios and play them out either with girlfriends or with barbies, sometimes even just in my mind.
When did you first start writing?
Seriously, about 6 months after having my youngest. About 17 years ago now.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Although my first book was about reincarnation through time, my last 3 books are not about fiction but more about self improvement. I am in a mode of wanting to help people and change lives.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom of writing and saying what I want and express my thoughts without having to wait for approval from a company or publishing house.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
They offer me a place to showcase my work without with freedom. It's awesome!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Expression, no doubt. I could always think and write much better than speaking. It is my way of expressing my deepest desires and also very therapeutic in a way because I get to figure stuff out as I write.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! They are my inspiration to keep writing. Without someone to share, you are writing to yourself.
What are you working on next?
Self improvement books seems to be my niche right now. I am happy with this, but I might go back to write a few fiction short stories. I am not limiting my writing style, so who knows?
Who are your favorite authors?
I have too many to list here but some of my favorites are Mark Twain, Dean Koontz. There are some awesome writers out there. I read a lot in my spare time, so there are tons.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life is beautiful and short. If you are lucky enough to get up and be here, you should be inspired to live the best life you can!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Research and spending time with family in my beautiful country home.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I am a part of many groups, so I get regular emails about just everything.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it's was a booklet about 26 weeks of self worth. I still have a copy of it. All with happy faces.
What is your writing process?
No process for me. I get an idea and then just sit down and write. I think for me the more I write the easier it gets. It's like a muscle, you develop it with regular exercise.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It was a book given to me by my adoptive mother. "Cinderella". I loved the magic and would get lost in the pages. I read it so much I could have recited it by heart.
How do you approach cover design?
I generally do something that I think would appeal to people but that has relevance to the subject or emotion from the book.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Phone. It's compact and you can keep it with you anywhere!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media such as Facebook and Twitter, also Instagram and Pinterest. There are such awesome opportunities now with the internet!
What do you read for pleasure?
I love different topics, so reading anything is great for me.
Do you do other writing other than your books?
Yes, I blog daily at www.happyhealthywealthyliving.com
I love writing and sharing my thoughts and if it helps someone, that's awesome too!
