Interview with G. R. Thomas

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Melbourne, Australia. I live within a short drive of a gorgeous mountainous region called the Dandenong Ranges. I was compelled to showcase this magical area in Awaken as the place where Sophia grew up. It has a natural ethereal quality about it that just inspires you to imagine what could be living amongst the forests and under the rocks.
When did you first start writing?
Seriously, 18months ago. I have written down and ripped up countless ideas. It was only last year that I felt inspired enough and brave enough to finally sit down and just write without stopping.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is the follow up to Awaken
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Honestly, the whole traditional publishing scene is just too daunting and I have read some of the best books by people who started out nowhere in particular. I support Indie authors who put their heart into their passion. I have been so inspired by others who just go for it, that I dived in and did it too. Indie publishing, although an uphill battle to be 'seen' allows you to have total control of your work, your time and your ideas.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
it's early days but the ease of publishing Awaken to this public space has been nothing short of too easy. I like the reach that Smashwords has across multiple providers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
discovering the voice/personality of a character as it reveals itself.
What do your fans mean to you?
What are you working on next?
book 2 , the follow up to Awaken.
Who are your favorite authors?
Ken Follett, Cassandra Clare, Phillippa Gregory, Lauren Kate, Amy Plum, Wilbur Smith, Robin Cook, Julie Kagawa, too many to mention
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
the possibilities of what new mischief I can get up to, my amazing children, my gorgeous husband and my beautiful horses
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Being a Mummy taxi, chasing my kids from karate to ballet to pony club. And lots of reading
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
lots of twitter links, recommendations by friends
What is your writing process?
lots of post it notes and a general outline. I know the very end of the final book in the Awaken series and have done so right from the beginning.
How do you approach cover design?
My idea-awesome artist to bring it to life. Awaken is designed to reflect Sophia and appear ethereal and enticing. I want the cover to make the reader just have to pick up the book. I LOVE a good cover
