Interview with Elizabeth St.John

When did you first start writing?
I never thought about writing a book before. It was in the year 2011 when my mother grew ill. One day, in order to deal with my emotions, I began to write poems. Suddenly, I was compelled to write my first novel. (I had no idea what I was doing) Before her death, I made a promise to my mother that I would finish my book, and so I have, along with many others.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Actually, I am working on the first book I ever wrote. My pain story is what I like to call it. Unfortunately, my mother passed before I could complete it. It has since been traditionally published. The publishing house closed their doors a year after publication. When I received my rights to my book, I put it away. I began to work on the book again in 2016. With a new cover, new character names, and a new title, it is now scheduled to be released in OCT 2017.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My family and friends are a huge encouragement. I love having the control over my work and who reads it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords had given me the freedom to not only distribute my work to a wide variety of readers, but I love the features. I can gift my book to anyone I like without having to purchase the book first. I can also make any of my work available for free anytime I like. Thank you, Smashwords.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing gives me peace of mind. There is nothing better than a hot cup of coffee, great music, and putting my thoughts down on paper.
What do your fans mean to you?
The fans. What can I say about the most important people in the reading world? They are the ones who are the real backbone. They show amazing support by not only purchasing authors work, but they are also the ones who spread the word. Their reviews help other readers discover books they may have never known about. A lot of authors do not take the time to engage with their readers, which is sad. Readers/Fans are what feeds our families, pays our bills, and keeps our books alive. I owe a great deal of appreciation to my fans. Thank you so much for always supporting me.
What are you working on next?
Once my recent work is complete and in readers hands, I will be "polishing" book 2 in the series. I hope to have it ready in late 2018.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family and the promise of a hot cup of coffee.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy relaxing with my family, reading a good book, fishing, watching movies. I'm a simple Oklahoma girl.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Readers. They play a huge part in my decision to pick up a book.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. I will never forget the creation of it. Hunting Jessica was the first book I ever wrote. I am currently working in a fine polish of the story now and it will be available to readers on Oct 10th, 2017.
What is your writing process?
Honestly, I do have to be in the mood to write. That is a good part about being a self-published author. I have no real deadline, other than ones I put on myself. I have the liberty to sit back and relax if needed. To answer the question, When I do feel the need or drive to work, all I need are good music, hot coffee, peanut butter based snacks and my laptop. I will sit down, and once the words begin to flow, I will turn everything off and shut everything out. (My child is old enough to watch himself now. Being a teenager, he ignores me most of the time. lol) I will not leave the house for days if my book requires my attention.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Memories of my childhood seem to have drifted away with time. No, I do not remember the first story I ever read.
How do you approach cover design?
Goodness, I will try to keep this short. When choosing a stock image for my covers, I find my top ten. Once I have chosen them, I will ponder on the top five. Out of the top five, I will choose my top three and so on, until I find the right image for my book and readers. It is easy for an author to forget who you are designing a cover for. The author is attached to their book in such a way, they will want to say so much on their cover. Usually ending in confusion for the reader on what the book is actually about. Though I am a picky author, and yes, I do want to make a statement with the cover, the reader's opinion is the most important. They are the ones who should be compelled to click on/pick up your book based on the cover alone. The cover should speak to the reader.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I do not have favorite books. I have books I enjoy and would probably read again. The list is far too long.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy Paranormal Romance and Erotica stories. None of that Step-dad, brothers best friend, Billionaire boss stuff. Give me a good story line with some saucy situations.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle, only because of its what I have. LOL
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth. Readers reviews are the most important in the success of an author. Yes, I do share my work on social media sites, facebook, twitter, instagram, but the readers are the best way to be seen.
Describe your desk
My desk is a folding card table at the moment. It is cluttered with notepads, my phone, a could random pens, laptop, mouse, and probably some dust. lol
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and raised in Oklahoma. I have never lived out of the Sooner State and probably never will. I do find myself using my experiences in the state in my work. I will even make up a name of a small town if needed in the state for a book I'm working on. As an author, I believe you should write what you know. I know this state and I use that to express my emotions in my writing. I have never been to New York, so why write about it? I owe my readers more than that.
Who are your favorite authors?
Charlaine Harris (The Sookie Stackhouse series, April Wood (The Enticing Series), Anne Rice (The Vampire Chronicles)
Published 2017-08-05.
