Interview with Oghenovo Obrimah

What is your e-reading device of choice?
I like the IPAD but currently I read on a Samsung Galaxy
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am a new author so the jury still is out on this one
Describe your desk
Chaotic yet I know where the stuff are (most of the time)
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the southern part of Nigeria. I had access to a great educational system and an environment steeped in both intellectual discourse and interest in spirituality. The fact that there was interaction with many families who taught in the oldest and arguably the best university in my country, Nigeria probably contributed significantly to this environment within which even at home I was surrounded by good books. While my Father was not part of the university system, he was and still is an extremely cultured gentleman who loved good books. I read David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, and The History of England while a science student in High School. In my High School, we had competitions as to who could read a "James Hadley Chase" or "Harold Robbins" novel fastest or read the highest number of these novels within a semester. In essence, my environment exposed me to great literature, including Christian literature such as the King James Bible. During the time I was growing up and in my native country Nigeria, however, Christian literature was not as receptive of Christian novels as is the case today. Other than Bedtime Stories in elementary school, the first Christian book (other than the Bible) I read was during my college days, and titled "True Spirituality". A great book about how to live the Christian life.
When did you first start writing?
I began to write love poems while in college because duh! I fell in love with a girl. I was involved in the preparation of original or unique (built from scratch) Bible Studies while in college as well. All of my jobs after college involved lots of writing and by the time I earned a PhD in Business and Management in 2005, I literally began to write for a living. In so far as literary writing is concerned, I began to write in 2005, completed my first manuscript in 2006 but never had the manuscript published. Subsequently, I completed three other manuscripts, including my book on leadership lessons that can be derived from the life of the Biblical Samson, and my book on truths that create or enhance loving relationships (both available through Smashwords). All of my literary writing at present are in the realm of Christian non-fiction. It is not impossible that I might tackle Christian fiction at some point in the future.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is the book titled, "Truths that Create or Enhance Loving Relationships: The Christian Perspective". So why did I write this book? Over the years, I came to realize many people have gnawing doubts in their minds as to how the God described in the Old Testament of the Bible could be the Father of Jesus Christ. In many instances, the God described in the Old Testament seems to be a reluctant lover, prone to threaten and with a tendency to impose incredulous demands on people who already believed in Him. Jesus never threatened, made no incredulous demands, and seemed to go out of His way to love people. So is The Father of Jesus Christ a tyrant who is persuaded by Jesus to love us or does He love us just as much as Jesus does? I wrote this book to provide glimpses of the Father of Jesus Christ from the Old Testament from which readers could decide for themselves whether The Father is just like Jesus or a tyrannical Father forced to love us because Jesus cares.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords provided me with a platform to self publish my books and make them available to the wider public. Smashwords' access to most other platforms for the distribution and sale of e-books improves the reach of my books and ultimately (I believe) will contribute greatly to the success of my books.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy I derive from writing is to find out someone read my book, enjoyed it, learnt something from it, and are excited about their plans targeted at implementing what they learnt from my book.
What are you working on next?
I am mulling over some ideas at present
Who are your favorite authors?
Francis Schaeffer (True Spirituality); James Hadley Chase (Series); Agatha Christie (Series); Joyce Meyer (Reduce Me To Love); Rick Warren (Purpose Driven Life); L.M. Montgomery; Jane Austen; Alexandre Dumas.

Lessons of Spiritual Leadership from the Life of Samson, the Nazirite

In this book, I demonstrate that while we can learn from Samson's mistakes, there are significant leadership lessons to be derived from Samson's life, attitude, faith, decisions, and actions. After all, while we must not minimize the importance of God's grace, God's characterization of Samson as a hero of faith implies Samson got a lot more things right than he got wrong.
