Interview with Petrie Serrano

What are you working on next?
Where No Cat has Gone Before: Loki's relaxing weekend plans are disrupted by a friend's conflict with the Space Ogre.

This is the first of a series of science fiction/fairytale fiction mashups in picture book form starring Loki. If you first met Loki in One Cat, you've missed a long career in offbeat animated shorts and comics.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I didn't grow up. What a silly question!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was Frog and Toad fanfiction, illustrated, called "Frog and Toad in Hawaii", for a unit in first grade on Caldecott-winning books. And it went exactly like this:

"Toad is having a great time surfing but Frog isn't [surfing] because he's too busy watching the Hula dancers."
What is the story behind your author avatar?
I knew Kermit the Frog was a puppet when I was little and chose to ignore it, so when I saw Jim Henson for the first time, my heart broke. He looked like a nice guy but having that last small step from illusion to reality crushed hurt. As a result I spent a long time online just pretending to be Loki, but in doing so my accounts were always in the danger of being deleted for not being human.

Since so many places now require a picture of a human I use an old picture of me dressed as Catwoman. Should any children wonder what Loki's human looks like, I look like an awkward, harmless, friendly little girl dressed as a cat. This is what part of me looks like on the inside, anyway, and I'd like to keep her alive as long as possible.
Describe your desk
One Cat I sketched all at once in bed on my portable desk (a clipboard full of printer paper, pens, pencils and index cards) after dreaming Loki was sitting at the end of my bed. I carry this one around the house and use it for plotting and sketches wherever I end up for a few minutes.

I use a standing desk in my studio for finishing artwork and just got an Over Bed Table for my recumbent bike. I'm not sure how that's going to work out. I may get work done on it, I may just use it to watch vintage Doctor Who while my son is playing Lego.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The sun. I like waking up before he does and starting nice things going for my family.
