Interview with Alfred Orero

Published 2018-08-17.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'll definitely say Facebook and other social media. Book links find their way to people who had never heard of you and they become curious about your work. After that, it is a matter of when they will get a copy of your book. Setting up a free giveaway is also really effective.
Describe your desk
Wow! Really? I'll try not to be embarrassed but, my thoughts are more orderly than my desk. That's all I can say for now.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Semi-urban locale in Kenya, which meant that at least I was exposed to a decent library. Every Wednesday in primary school was a library day, where we would visit the local library and read. I guess this gave me the foundation I required in grammar and vocabulary. We didn't have it all, but at least we were happy. I loved Wednesdays!
When did you first start writing?
I have written all my life. However, serious writing probably started in 2013, which was four years before I published my first book, By Fate and Blood.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is "The Universe Lives In Me", which is the second book in my poetry series. My initial plan was to write one poetry book, but after completing it, I felt that I had a lot more to say. That's how I decided to write the series. One more to go. Many themes run in the two books and the one remaining. I want to portray African poetry in a different way that combines our rich experiences with the contemporary style of writing.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Fear. I had heard stories of how many manuscripts are rejected, especially those by newbie authors. Indie publishing gave me an opportunity to learn how this world works first. Furthermore, I got to polish my craft and have more control over what I write and how I market it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has "smashed" the walls of restricted retailing of my books. I joined and my books can now reach many more readers worldwide. That is really inspiring. Gives me a reason to keep writing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
First, I get to create other worlds for my readers. I get to educate, inspire and motivate people that I have never met. Thus, we meet through the books.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are the reason I write. I read their reviews and it warms my heart because I see that I have made a difference in someone's life.
What are you working on next?
The third and final book of the "A Century Poems" series. On the sidelines, I am also writing my other novel due for the end of the year. Watch this space.
Who are your favorite authors?
Danielle Steel, Stephen King, and Tim Ferriss
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The possibilities outside my door. The hope that when I do it right, I will become the best version of myself.
