Interview with O. Susmita

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a cosmopolitan city of India. But, my early years were in a smaller town where community played a large part in our lives. So, while the setting for most of my stories is definitively urban, there is a certain bit of longing or nostalgia for the simpler and more communal life of the town.
When did you first start writing?
I believe when I was 10. I wrote a poem called My Family that I was so inordinately proud of until one year later when I was too embarrassed to even look at it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had stories to tell and Smashwords had a platform to offer. A match made in heaven, I say.
What is your writing process?
Put the pen to paper or finger to keyboard and let the strokes decide where they want to go.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It is the unloading of any burden that is weighing down my mind. It is therapeutic, cathartic in a way. I love the feeling of relief I get when my pen stops and I feel much lighter than I had done before.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm in the medical profession. Ideally, I'm supposed to be studying in every free minute I get. Like, right now.
What do you read for pleasure?
Any fiction I can lay my hands on, mostly in the mystery and thriller and fantasy genre.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
A lot of browsing.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Adobe digital editions on my computer.
Describe your desk
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The promise of a new day and new laughs.
