Interview with Oscar -Oz Benson

Published 2014-01-13.
What is your writing process?
I think about the message I want to send and that may go on for many months. I begin to take notes and discover the title I think will entice my audience to want to know more.
Then I begin to research the topics I will discuss more in depth in order to deliver the most amount of correct and precise information possible to my audience.
I then begin to write when my heart says it is a good day. My mood and my heart and my situation must all be aligned to write as if I were writing poetry.
My writing then becomes critical as I cannot stay in this position long.
I study more and write and study and research and write and after sometimes months I begin to edit
what has been put down. I begin also to find others to help in the edit process and ask them what they think
of the topic and the interest level as well.
Finally after an arduous time period I will publish.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It was a poem called "Winkin' Blinkin' and Nod" and my father's voice was like none I have ever heard since. He read with passion and excitement and authority in such a way that I never forgot it and have always admired it ever since. He took me there on the river of Crystal light and into the sea of blue, i.e. my life's dream. I to this day have sought to recreate that voice and ability within me.
How do you approach cover design?
I think Cover design is one of the most important things about a book outside of the title itself. Therefore I have forced myself to learn how to do many different things in order to bring forth a cover worthy of the title. I have not studied design nor photography except on my own free time. I must admit I am lacking some things in these respects. However some have told me a few of the covers are exciting and interesting. However I do need and want to change those which I feel are not good.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My all time favorite is of course H. D. Thoreau's --On Walden Pond. I love his writing and he led me to think about my self in a more positive light. I found that I too had done something similar to him without knowing what he had done because I didn't read him till later in my life. I too built a house outside of the common ways available such as borrowing from the bank and hiring a builder. I designed it and built it by tearing down other buildings and using the old materials and then buying my other materials as I went along. Many friends at different times came for a day or two and would help. I finally lived in it and it was some of the best living in my life thus far.
Secondly I suppose that I was intrigued mostly with Edgar Allen Poe and his poetry because of it's darkness and mystery.
Number three would be probably the Bible as there are so many great stories in it and the controversy over all that you hear and read concerning it. I have read it through and through, pouring over many parts of it hundreds of times. It truly has impacted my life from when I was very young.
I have not read much fiction. I don't really like to think of fiction as I want to be factual.
Number 4 would have to be --Enzyme Nutrition by Dr. Edward Howell. After I read this then I began to change my ways of treating my body and found that I could escape from the spiral of medicine and hospitalization that so many die from.
Lastly my favorite is --Your Body's Many Cries for Water, by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj M.D. This writing took me to greater health in many ways and a deeper understanding of the world as well. The world and our bodies are mostly made of water and water indeed is important and contains a memory as well. Hence this was the opening of a great door of wisdom for me.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love knowing so many things and I must know many things in order to teach. I love reading almost every thing except of course fiction.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love to hold a hard back book in my hands and used to read in bed lots. I suffered from bad posture and for years would visit a Chiropractor or some other take your money guy. Now I usually use my Mac Air to read and my PC also to sit in front of to write. But a hardback bound paper copy in my hands remains my favorite.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the countryside and around many animals. I had a buck skinned stallion when I was young that was my favorite buddy. Later another horse that gave me opportunities no other boys my age had. My dogs too were always at my side to help me discover my world and myself. My father too was always traveling to different places and we lived in several states before I was out of high school. I saw and experienced a great many things that most of my peers never have done. This is my well do draw from when writing.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing some poetry when I was about 15. Some was very cheesy but some was pretty good.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I felt a desperate need to cry out loudly!! I had tried sending to many publishers and never got a good response. I published my first book by copy machine and just gave copies away to the number of nearly 400 or more. One or two people offered to pay me and one young lady succeeded in doing so. This was a great encouragement. Then when others began giving me their view of what I had done I became even more inspired to write and began to seek out ways to publish apart from the main publishing houses which gave me nothing. So when I fell upon the internet ways and indie publishing I knew that this was the answer.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has helped me immensely to formulate my abilities and begin to be read. I am always wondering about my many readers. What they think and how my words may be coming to them.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When my readers tell me what my words have done for them. I am always so amazed that I have touched them so deeply.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are like gold, no greater than gold! Greater than diamonds!! They are almost the essence of the fresh spring air after a nights rain early in the sunny morn.
What are you working on next?
The Mystery of Medicine and How to Escape From It.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The words of my readers. The voices of my friends.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I explore the great blue and green world in which I live, love and play.
