Interview with Lisa Paolillo

What are you working on next?
I am trying out another contemporary romance, this time with a mystery/suspense element. This one takes place at a college reunion, where members of a group of friends start turning up dead.
Who are your favorite authors?
Probably too many to count, but here are a few: Lisa Scottoline, Tess Gerritsen, Lisa Gardner, Lisa Jackson, Jodi Picoult, Janet Evanovich, Larry McMurtry, Robert B. Parker, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Marian Keyes,
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to cook and I enjoy shopping, especially online. I started my own plus size fashion blog on Tumblr recently. I have two dogs and four cats, and I love spending time with my pets. I also enjoy watching TV and movies with my husband. And reading, of course!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Sometimes just by browsing through the catalog on my ereader. I also subscribe to BookBub, which recommends ebooks based on my personal preference.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I don't remember the exact story, but as a kid I wrote stories all the time. I wrote a whole series of stories based on a character named Monica Brown. Monica had 6 brothers and sisters, and they formed their own band.
Describe your desk
I don't have a desk right now! I usually write at my dining room table or I borrow my husband's desk.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. My characters all tend to be from Southwest PA as well. They are usually from blue collar backgrounds, like the folks in my hometown. The city of Pittsburgh also plays a role most of my stories.
When did you first start writing?
I think it was around second or third grade. I definitely remember writing a Monica Brown story for a third grade school project, but I don't think it was my first in the series. I also wrote a story about two friends finding a genie lamp for a fourth grade class assignment.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The proliferation of ebooks is what inspired me. I got a ereader myself a few years ago, and that gave me the opportunity to try out some indie authors. A friend suggested I check out Smashwords, and I knew right away that was the path I was going to take.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I just have so many stories inside of me that want to come out. I love picking out traits from people I know and using them in characters in my stories. It also allows me to live vicariously. For What Happened in Vegas, I got to fulfill my childhood desire to go into acting.
