Interview with Linda Palmer

What is your e-reading device of choice?
I'm on my third Kindle, not because they go bad, but because they keep getting better.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm not that good with marketing. I rely on Facebook and Twitter to announce book releases and make use of Amazon's Kindle Select Program every now and then to offer free reads to give readers a sample of my writing. I've also offered free reads at Smashwords. Occasionally I participate in web scavenger hunts offered by The Romance Review or similar sites. This results in a lot of hits on my website.
Describe your desk
My desk is surrounded by wall art of the characters that inspire me most--the Twilight gang, Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton in Prince of Persia, the True Blood characters, Harry and Ginny, Thor and Jane. I have Will from Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as Michael and Lizbeth from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I have a wolf calendar nearby, too. On the practical side, I have three printers, office paraphernalia and supplies, and a file cabinet. I also have a lot of family memorabilia--my mom's piano, a quilt made by my little sis, family photos, figurines that were my grandmother's, and various ceramics made by my best friend.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in the forties (barely) in Arkansas and have seen a lot of changes through the years. Small towns and certain well-loved things from my past often find a way into my books--my grandmother's boarding house and her big front porch, complete with porch swing and glider; rainstorms; sisters; and science fiction (my very first favorite TV show was Flash Gordon). I was a big reader with interests ranging from my dad's A.A. Fair detective paperbacks to Victoria Holt, Mary Stewart, and Daphne DuMaurier. My mother always encouraged my writing and my drawing, another pastime, as did my teachers.
When did you first start writing?
I first wrote for pleasure in the third grade. Poetry. I later moved on to short stories and finally to full-length fiction.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I just finished Second Skin, a book about a shapeshifting bodyguard and his reluctant client. I'd been reading a lot of Janet Evanovich and love her sense of humor. So I decided to throw some humor into mine. Since I love mountains, I set it in Colorado.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had a good career as a traditional author with a literary agent. I wrote for Silhouette Books, but got tired of the genre after ten years and took a breather. Reading Meg Cabot's young adult paranormal series inspired me to write again, this time in a totally different way targeting a young adult audience. When I didn't get anywhere in my search for an agent, I researched indie possibilities. I found a website that listed e-publishers and began submitting. Sugar and Spice Press, Wild Horse Press, and Uncial Press all went to contract with me on separate projects. From there I transitioned into self-publishing, though I still write for Uncial Press some, too.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has excellent distribution and good conversion tools for manuscripts. They've been invaluable to me in that regard.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to write. I really do. From a very young age (under six), I let my imagination go where it would by dressing up and acting out whatever story was in my head. Thank goodness I had sisters and friends who played with me as well as a mom who'd let us make a huge mess as long as we cleaned up afterwards. So the dining room chairs became our stage and the carport our castle. My dad's love of music greatly influenced me. We often acted out Broadway shows. I once knew every lyric to every song in Camelot and My Fair Lady and still may. Writing down what was inside my head was a natural next step, I think. Nothing gives me more pleasure than creating characters and plugging them into a plot. I try to include the three musts: (1) Unwilling alliance, (2) Time constraint, and the (3) Aha!
What do your fans mean to you?
Nothing is more thrilling than hearing from a fan. I especially appreciate when one of them takes a moment to review my book at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love JK Rowling, Suzanne Collins, Stephenie Meyer, and Janet Evanovich. I also enjoy Jim Butcher and Charlaine Harris. I was most influenced by Charlotte Bronte, Victoria Hole, Madeleine Brent, Mary Stewart, Daphne DuMaurier, and Phyllis Whitney.
