Interview with patricia DeLeon

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever read was when I was in pre-school. I was reading at the age of 3. So when I entered preschool I was ahead of most children. I remember the cat in the hat by Dr. Suess was my favorite. I just always wanted to be a writer from that point on. My children grew up with the whole collection of Dr. Suess and other writers. I can read that story without the book.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My favorite five books so far are as follows:
To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee : because it is a classic and I enjoy classics!
The art of racing in the rain Garth Stein : this book touched every part of my being.
The white Queen (all books) Philipa Gregory: I love a good story mixed in with real history.
The eyes of the dragon Stephen king : I enjoy the fact that an author can tell stories out of his genre.
The Narrows by my ultimate fav Michael Connelly: I love any Harry Bosch story. He is a real person to me.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read many different types of books. I even listen to books on tape. I read fiction mostly. I enjoy crime , drama, horror, and sci fi. I enjoy non fiction biographies , history, and true crime . I read novels from time to time.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use my apple or my nook. I sometimes read on my phone if I have too. I love books any way I can get them!
Describe your desk
I actually have a computer desk for my home computer. My laptop is what I write on. It's not on a desk. My desk is used for other things non writing.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in two places. I lived in Elmont Long Island , which some people call it Queens. I don't. I lived in Elmont from birth to Seven years of age. I often in summer visited back to my family home. I lived from seven years of age to nineteen in unfortunately PA. In the Poconos. I did not enjoy that part of my life. I got married and moved back to Long Island , but in another place. I lived in Bayshore Long Island for several years and then moved to Shoreham Long Island. I live in Shoreham Presently and love it. I think living in Shoreham influenced me the most. I found my creative side.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was in first grade. If you want to be technical, I was twelve. I started to write in notebooks and kept a journal as well. My adult writing started after my first son was born. I was twenty two years old.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Interesting enough, it is about a girl who is an alien. Her blood type is the center of the story. She just assumes she has a rare blood type and health issues. She looses her parents and finds out she is a princess from another planet. She was promised to a tyrant of an alien Miso. Raya the main character just turned eighteen and her whole world is turned upside down.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I don't classify myself as any specific author. We all are authors, and we don't need a title.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I hope in the future it contributes to my success. I would love for children and adults of all ages to enjoy my writing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy of writing is the ideas that flow from my inner being. I think writing is an art form. Writing frees the soul. I enjoy creating characters that are believable and real to a reader.
What do your fans mean to you?
If and when I get fans. I will appreciate them to my fullest capacity. A good example is twitter and how most authors reach out to there fans. A good example is Michael Connelly. Who would think this man would respond to a normal person like me. He did. That to me is being humble. I always want to feel genuine and humble to fans.
What are you working on next?
I am working on several books right now. The next book will be a novel about my grandmother and her journey. I never met her, but her story is a colorful one. I am creating the story from facts and adding fiction as well. I have to do that due to the circumstances.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have so many favorites. My number one is Michael Connelly. I also enjoy Janet Evanovich, Charlaine Harris, Joh Saul, Phillipa Gregory and many more.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
First and foremost God inspires me in every way. My children and husband inspire me to get up everyday.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend my time reading extensively and watching T.V.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Truthfully , I use the Nooks comment section. I also get suggestions in some of my magazines.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do remember the first story I ever wrote. I think my mother even saved it. It was a story about a princess. It was called the Princess gets lost. I wrote about a young princess who got lost in the forest and met a slew of characters.
What is your writing process?
I generally mediate. I get my ideas from everywhere. As soon as I get an idea I write it down on a piece of paper or in my computer. I write as soon as the thought hits me. I always make time to write.
How do you approach cover design?
I really haven't gotten that far in my writing for a cover design. I assume it will be plain for the first published one.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I really need to brush up on everything marking. I assume twitter, google and face book will be my outlets in the beginning.
