Interview with Patrick C. Van Slyke

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Wyoming. Sheridan Wyoming is just your typical small western town - lots of cowboys, very few stores, not a lot to do. We played a bunch of roll-playing games, like Dungeons and Dragons etc. During this time I read mostly fantasy but I have always been a horror fan.
When did you first start writing?
I tried writing a science fiction novel when I was about ten but it was basically just a cheep knock off of 'Star Wars!' It makes me laugh now. I then, around fifteen tried to write a fantasy novel, but by then I was becoming more interested in girls than writing. I wrote a lot in college for different classes but that doesn't count because I had to. I seriously started writing about three years ago.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I don't want to give too much away. It is going to blow everyone socks off (I hope) and it is difficult to discuss without giving the plot away but lets just say it has to do with genetics (and horror.)
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Easy question with easy answer. I am an Indie author because I cannot find an agent or publisher to represent me. Sad, I know. I was sure I was going to be the next Steven King. Wrong.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Oh yes. It forced me to really look into the dynamics of the layout itself. I have also sold over Smashwords so I happy about that. It has been an interesting ride.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing 'The End.' I love finishing a book - looking back over one-hundred thousand words and saying 'I created that.'
What do your fans mean to you?
Well, they mean everything. I want people to read my work. I want them to enjoy reading as I enjoyed writing. I want to be a success. I want to know I have talent. Fans can lift you above the heard. I love it when I get a message saying 'hurry up with that next book.' Yes, I have had that message.
What are you working on next?
A novel about genetics and horror. I am also putting together a promo video for my trilogy FORSAKEN. Of course there is the always all encompassing networking and promoting - but my new novel is almost half way done.
Who are your favorite authors?
Steven King and James Clavel - Take me somewhere I have never been and make be believe it. Scare me so that I don't want to turn off the lights.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have an undying requirement to succeed. That takes work. it is not just going to happen. I have to believe in myself and show it before others will believe in me.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend my time with my daughter and fiance. I spend it watching horror movies. I read. I exercise - all the usual crap that everyone does.
