Interview with Paul Rushworth-Brown

Published 2021-01-24.
What are you working on next?
I am writing my third novel 'Dream of Courage." It is undergoing its first edit. It is set in about 1650 in the time when England was a Republic under the reign of the Puritan, Oliver Cromwell. Witch-hunting, illegal wool broggers, the Halifax Gibbet, the ducking pond and a nasty little man by the name of Milton Killsin will keep the reader spellbound. It provides a good insight into the wool industry which was England's staple at the time.
Who are your favorite authors?
Wilbur Smith and Charles Dickens. I believe my novels have a Dickinsish way about them.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Improving as an author and writing a best seller.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a teacher.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I would rather write than read, I can escape to the 17th Century by doing research for my novels.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
'Skulduggery' has recently been picked up by Shawline Publishing in Melbourne and will be re-released in April 2021
Exciting, mysterious and historically accurate adventures pull no punches about the life and hardships of 'copyholders' living on the moors of Yorkshire in 1590. A time when life expectancy was thirty-five, children rarely lived past the age of six and ale was consumed liberally because the water was undrinkable.
You will walk the moors of Yorkshire and try a jack of ale at the Kings Arms; you will laugh, cry and feel empathy for young Thomas Rushworth and his descendants who face the rigours of life living as copyholders on Lord Birkhead’s land at Hall Green. An area I have visited many times to do research for novels.

What is your writing process?
I just write to develop a story then make changes to the storyline later to add some twists and turns and bring it all together.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
'Catch 22' it made me laugh.
How do you approach cover design?
I allowed my daughter to design the cover for Skulduggery but the publishers are redesigning it for the second edition.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Having a professional publisher take on the marketing of the novel allowing me to just write.
Describe your desk
Three monitors, dog treats, many cables.
