Interview with Janice Davis

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I didn't discover my writing talent until five years ago. I wrote a book with another author in 2012 titled "Face to Face With God: Healing the Cry Within". We went through the process of trying to have it published, but soon realized the difficulty in having a traditional publisher pick up the book. We decided to self-publish. Unfortunately, at that time, I didn't know about Smashwords. A friend of mine ran across an article in our local newspaper about indie writers. He clipped the article out for me to read. I was fascinated by the ease of having a book published, and the fact, there are undiscovered writers who are making a good living through their writing. I decided to give it a try.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Well, I'm just getting started. I'm in the final phase of editing my third book titled "Unmasking the Spirit of Shame: Breaking Free from the Past". I've read the blogs on Smashwords on how to be successful and I plan to follow their advice.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy comes from encouraging others, using my own life experiences about emotional healing and health. I want them to know there is always hope, even in the worst of circumstances.
What do your fans mean to you?
I care deeply about hurting people. I've personally experienced a lot of heartbreak in my own life, so I want people to know they can overcome any obstacle with the help of God.
Who are your favorite authors?
I'm from the deep south. I grew up reading Eugenia Price books. She was best known for historical novels. They were books that kept you on the edge of your seat. One of my favorite books she wrote was "The Beloved Invader". It is a historical novel about a wealthy young northerner named Anson Dodge, who falls in love with a girl named Ellen only to lose her on their honeymoon. The backdrop for the book takes place on St. Simons Island, Georgia, a historical landmark where the English and Spanish fought in the Battle of the Bloody Marsh. The story is a beautiful tale of love and loss.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Hope! I always have hope that life will get better and better.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work with the elderly. I love helping them. I believe they have a lot of wisdom to offer this younger generation. I also enjoy gardening, interior design, I have a passion for learning and love being with my family.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I haven't read many ebooks, but I'm beginning to realize there's a plethora of books out there to be discovered.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My first writing was a poem. Actually, it was published in our local newspaper. I couldn't believe they wanted to publish it in the paper. It was a true honor to be recognized..
How do you approach cover design?
Well, it really depends on the book. The book I'm working on now is titled "Unmasking the Spirit of Shame". I believe the cover for this book needs to be dramatic because the title is somewhat mysterious. The book title and cover should match one another in expression, so as to grab the attention of potential readers.
