Interview with Rod Wright

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I do. It was before I started kindergarten. If I remember correctly, a cereal company held a writing contest for kids. Even though I was too young to read or write, I wanted to win the grand prize which was a pony. I made up the story and my mother wrote it down and mailed it for me. I didn't win the pony, to my parents relief, but I won a western style ring.
What do you read for pleasure?
Thriller Novels like those written by Jeffery Archer. History books, especially those that are about the 19th century. Science books that discuss prehistoric animals. Books and articles on American antique firearms that were made during the War Between the States.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up as an Air Force Brat Some of the places where I lived as a child were California, Hawaii and Texas. Living in many different places has caused me to see beyond regional stereotypes. There are good and bad people no matter where you happen to live.. The location of the story is secondary to the characters.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors in no particular order are, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling, Jeffery Archer, John Sanford and Dick Francis
Why did you write broken arrow?
I had two reasons for writing Broken Arrow. The first reason was to try to convey what life fifty years ago was like for young adults. I hope my readers will be able to sense how different it was from the present. The second reason I wrote the book was to recognize the military men and women who defended their country during those dark times on the home front. Much has been written about those who fought in the rice fields of South Vietnam or challenged the MIGs and SAMS in the sky over North Vietnam, but little is written about those who served their country on the bases in the U.S.A.
