Interview with Pepsy Apolo Bahlekazi

When did you first start writing?
I started writing in 1993 focusing on Christian religion.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Having struggled without any success on the "orthodox" publishing houses, I found this alternative less stressful and the rewards also seem to far outweigh those of traditional publishing particular in the medium of electronic publishing; the readers or the target market is easy reachable through this medium.
What's the story behind your latest book?
New parents of all ages undertake parenting with distorted views which are often clouded with their own faulty upbringing, in this book I strive to portray the necessary balance for a health parent-child relationship.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I still await to realize my success (since I only published five days ago, 28 Jan. 2016) and yet I am highly motivated by Smashwords' transparency and professionalism in the manner they are handling my publishing efforts.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The opportunity to positively influence readers to look into daily matters from a different perspective, there's no greater joy than that to me.
What are you working on next?
An unknown subject to many of us out there, something we have not heard spoken of as yet! Watch this space!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My God-given purpose of serving God through serving men!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Studying mostly Christian literature.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, a play I acted out back in my high school days - it was about a controversial religious character.
What is your writing process?
I often pen down my thoughts on matters of importance to me and my immediate community; it often takes any direction ranging from a social trending topic to a conversation over a table dinner at home. I simply pen down few lines under a determined topic or start with the story-line and give it a heading afterwards; whichever comes first!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
With great fondness, I do indeed! A Xhosa story about a raging war between twin brothers regarding the position of superiority. I was fascinated by the richness of the language used and the introduction of customary practices (to us the younger generation) regarding laws of dispute resolution the author employed to both educate and entertain his readers; that was great!
How do you approach cover design?
The use of colour, texture and typesetting often plays a vital role in me paying special attention to the title of the book.
