Interview with Peter Both

Published 2021-06-06.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a big manga fan and I love reading. So when I'm not writing I'm curled up with a book under my favorite blanket.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I wrote was Danny Boy. Back then it was called "The Virgin toy boy". Not exactly a marketable title if you ask me. I started the story in 2008, where Danny falls head over heels for a handsome man sipping his coffee. What he thought was a fairy tale turned out to have a bitter end. Danny boy's manuscript slept in a drawer for 8 years. The day I was about to delete this obscure story from my old hard disk, a little voice told me not to. I'm happy I didn't.
What is your writing process?
I'm a discovery writer, in short, I let my imagination carry me. It may sound nice but it's not. I spend more time crying my eyes out and drown in self-pity than actually writing. I suffer from doubt about my skill to write a decent story. Please, be gentle with me.
How do you approach cover design?
I don't design my own covers. I let a pro do that. All my illustrations are done by Sxperimental. An artist I found on instagram. I just trust that she will find the best way to make my characters come to life and she never disappoints.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love sweet romance(a slow burn). The type that leaves a warm feeling. Also the type you see the two characters develop their interest slowly. But also my favorite tropes are enemy to lovers. The manga: Only the ring finger knows by Satoru Kannagi & Hotaru Odagiri, also the novel The Binding by Bridget Collins a masterpiece of intrigue.
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything. Fantasy, romance, action, thriller, scifi. As long as the author craft a character I'm interested in, I'll read it. I love character driven plot. Make me love the protagonist, I won't care if he is cooking or slaying dragons, I'm curious. I'll read it.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I'll probably shock many...I love to read on my phone. (Hide face) I'm so basic. But I love to read while I'm going to work. Public transport is a hassle and I love to escape to another realm through stories instead of facing reality.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Right now, Tik tok is going a great job promoting my books. I started with a website where my stories are available, then I added instagram ( I'm not well verged in marketing. I barely know how it all works. But I'm trying.
Describe your desk
I have a writing desk and I spend most of my time writing in bed. Each time I sit at my desk, I end up procrastinating. Maybe it's not the desk's fault...probably. My desk is facing a window without a view, blank walls and a tiny patch of blue sky. Depressing.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a rural place with weedy fields in the backyard. I was a happy kid, I liked running in the tall grass, it burned when I shower before bed. I had friends, we laughed, we were unworried. I kept that innocence and curiousity part of me. I kept the awe and love for nature and large spaces. I hope I convey it with my words.
When did you first start writing?
I always like stories, telling stories. Somehow, school and teachers dimmed my flame. The oppression to fit in a mold. To be someone who wasn't me. I became doubtful in my teens. I'd lost my way. It took me a long time until I found my love for telling stories again. Every thing wrote was not good enough. I've become my worst enemy. I'm slowly trying to love myself and my work.
