Interview with Peter P. Sellers

How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I get my heads up on books from Goodreads, Amazon alerts and general media.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I am blessed with the time and support that allows me to devote almost unlimited time writing and promoting my books.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing or marketing, I read and I'm a big golf nut. My wife and I spend a lot of time with our two Jack Russells. I probably spend way too much time watching series on streaming sites.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote with a serious commitment to see it through to the end was my first novel, VERNON FIX.
What is your writing process?
Anyone's writing process is surely a matter of available time. For me, because I'm retired, I like to hit the computer around eleven and go to mid afternoon when might I read for awhile, play golf or, dare, I say...take a nap. But, i'm always thinking about what i've written and where i'm going with the story. At any time , day or night, Imight jot notes on ideas that have come to me.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever read that had an impact on me was "Black Stallion" by Walter Farley. As a result, horses became my every waking fascination. He wrote a series of books with the same recurring theme of the black stallion and I've never forgotten the excitement and enjoyment I've gotten from reading series that have the same basic set of characters. My first four books was a series and I'm very proud of it.
How do you approach cover design?
The approach to cover design is a great subject. I love the process. The reason I'm so pumped on the process is the luck I've had with a great cover designer/artist. I tell her how I see it, maybe send some pictures from an internet search, and we play around with it. Then, once I've approved the elements I give it to her to do her thing. She is fabulous and so talented. Given the tight budgets and available images she always manages to capture the essence I want with the cover. She is particularly creative with fonts.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My five favorite books are by either Len Deighton, Raymond Chandler, Ian Rankin, John D. MacDonald. That's the closest I can get to best books.
What do you read for pleasure?
For pleasure I read a lot of spy, private detective, lone man against a bad world, interesting characters that cross the line a bit in the name of duty and right.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on my kindle and my I Pad. Love my little kindle with the side mounted bright light. Works great in the dead of night when I can't sleep. Best time to read...usually can only stay awake for forty-five minutes.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
It's too early in the game to report techniques that work for me. I'm just beginning.
When did you first start writing?
I've had a long and incredibly interesting career in film and television production. i was a director, writer, producer on many of the projects I was involved in. All of the above requires a little writing (or sometimes a lot) but that type of writing didn't qualify for what I'm committed to now. I started my first novel in a rented trailer on the backside of a polo club property in Florida in 2001. I had to idea about form, structure, proper dialogue punctuation, etc...I just started telling a story. Now, I had been a voracious reader for most of my life so I had some good common sense about things. I read a bunch of "how to books"...some where helpful, some not. What I focused on was writing a succession of scenes that I felt passionate about....and unlike some of the film and television stuff I was used to, I could make stuff up...that was the best feeling. There is no substitute for just writing...and then rewriting.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing is telling a story you believe in and want to tell it so interestingly that other's will get great fun reading it. Obviously, if you accomplish telling it so that reader's enjoy it, you will get great personal satisfaction of accomplishment and that is what we're all after in the end.
