Interview with Peter Schnake

Published 2014-09-23.
What does the future look like without bees?
Pretty dismal. Bees are responsible for pollinating all crops except for the cereal grains like wheat, oats, rye, rice, etc. So, in the world of "A Land Overflowing," the cereal grains become one of the main food sources. But I posit that some business savvy minds will harness hand-pollination or other alternative pollination techniques to continue on most crops. But they'll be extremely expensive. Of course, in the world of "A Land Overflowing," there is some political upset and some folks want to limit access to food to those who have "inferior" genes or who have committed a crime, etc. It all creates a really tense environment.
What are you working on next?
The parameters for the world of "A Land Overflowing," (no bees, no helium, etc.) has really inspired me. You'll see more from this world. Maybe it won't all be about Gideon, but it will hang on similar ideas.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Even though I was amassing a pile of manuscripts, I kept grimacing when I heard about indie publishing. It didn't carry the same reputation, I thought. It finally came to me that I wasn't truly a writer unless I had readers. Indie publishing was the vehicle that allowed my stories to reach readers. I knew my readership would start small, that didn't bother me. I trusted that God would use what I wrote to bless the right people and that was enough for me.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I can't thank Smashwords enough for everything they do for me. Not only are they enabling me to distrubute to retailers like iBookstore, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and more all the time, but they keep me up to date on the latest indie book trends and news so that I'm the best equipped I can be and I can focus on the writing.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first story in third grade. It was called "Mouse Hearts." It was about a mouse who made valentines for all his friends on Valentine's Day.
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything! I grew up on detective fiction and science fiction, so those are my first loves, but I also devour the classics and mythology, southern gothic, literary, and more.
