Interview with Phillip Rhoades

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've never been one to go around begging people to publish my work. In junior-high and high school, I published several booklets of my poetry using the library copy machine and a stapler. I'd work to fit as much as possible on one or two sheets of paper (5 cents a copy), then fold, cut, and staple the work into books.

I have always been an "indie author" and probably always will be.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords offers a new set of customers that only offering work through Amazon completely misses.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Watching a world grow out form my fingertips onto the page, then be reborn in the minds of my readers.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Thinking about writing.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I discover the ebooks I read through suggestions from friends, blog posts, and serendipity.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It would have been shortly after I could write at all, so it's hazy.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a standard cover template I put together in Inkscape, I get some decent imagery from pixabay or take a photo and I go from there.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I generally prefer non-networked e-readers like the Sony PRS-505.
Describe your desk
A mess.
When did you first start writing?
As soon as I could put words on paper. I started telling stories as soon as I could talk.

When I was a fairly young child, I encountered a light that woke me from my sleep. Deep, blue, and impossible. It was gas and liquid, solid and light all at once. It flooded my world and swept me away to a strange place. It even led me to the voice of a new friend who may not even be real. This is how I remember it. Take it as you will.

Burgundy Wolf, a private detective working the streets, slums, and sky-rises of Heartbeat City, sits in his office with his trusty dog, waiting for the next case to arrive. A knock on the door.
