Interview with Phil Pearl

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on the South Coast of England, in the country's only island city, Portsmouth. My best subject at school was English and my love of writing grew out of that.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wrote the novel. 'killing Time', as a semi-autobiographical account of my experiences in the computer software industry. And I also wanted to highlight some social and political issues in the United States that I'd been personally involved with.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After established publishing houses couldn't even be bothered to review Killing Time, I read an article about a successful indie author, and decided to go that route.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Originally I had intended to only offer printed copies of 'Killing Time'. But when I discovered Smashwords I realized that it would be possible to offer eBook versions as well.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Sharing with others my ideas and experiences.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything - without them nobody would read my book!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Finding ways to implement great ideas.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Writing computer software.
What is your writing process?
Immerse myself in the story and characters that I create, so that it just flows naturally.
How do you approach cover design?
I look for a graphic image that talks to me about the book's content.
